I'm think I might want to upgrade the memory for my Vostro 1500. I'm going to get the Smart Value Package for the Vostro 1500 which is $599 in the US. However, I think the 1GB of memory (1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM) isn't good enough for running Windows Vista. If I'm going to upgrade the memory, is there a website that can show me how to replace a memory card in a dell vostro? Where can I get another memory card for the Dell Vosotro? I've found a few websites on changing memory cards on laptops:
http://www.daileyint.com/hmdpc/upgrade.htm
and
http://www.computermemoryupgrade.net...op-memory.html
It seems to be easy on this website, it's just on the bottom of the laptop. However, I heard it's hard to do on a dell laptop? Would doing this be easy for a person new to messing around with computers?
Thanks!!!!

There's one memory card on the bottom, and one under the keyboard, which you have to remove the keyboard to replace. The 1400 has both cards on the bottom of the chassis.
-
One is under the kayboard, meaning you have to pretty much open up the whole thing to get to it. It's not difficult, but it can be intimidating for someone who's never done something like that before.
There's a guide on this site for doing it on a Latitude, I believe. The process would be similar, so see if you can find it. -
Why would you trust some random website when the Dell manual shows you exactly what to do in easy to understand steps?

Thanks for the tip tremonti22, I'll look it up. Does anybody have any idea where I can get the memory card that's at least 2GB?
Thanks! -

Do all memory cards work for the Vostro 1500? Also, is there a minimum of RAM that I can use? -

It seems like the steps for replacing memory on the Vostro 1500 and Latitude series are the same:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1500/en/sm/memory.htm#wp1180288 (for replacing memory on Vostro 1500)
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=130014 (here's the link to the thread that tremonti22 was talking about...seems very useful)
Just wondering, are there different type of notebook memory? Which memory card will be compatable with my Vostro 1500? There seems to be a few catagories of memory on the left side:
http://shop4.outpost.com/catreq/974 -
yes there are different types of notebook memory. the vostro 1500 takes SO-DIMM DDR2 667.

Vostro 1400's placement is a piece of cake. Both DIMMs are underneath the laptop in a compartment.

Thanks for the info dohhellya. Please let me know when you replace the memory on your Vostro 1500. Are you just going to replace the RAM right when you get your Vostro 1500, right before turning it on?
Which brand of memory cards is more reliable and durable?
Thanks! -
ya right when i get it ima open it up and change the RAM. it wont b for a few weeks, but if u have 2 wait that long then ill letcha know how it goes then. i always go to newegg.com when i buy because of the prices and reviews. read the reviews on the site, because the people are really honest.

Im upgrading my ram as soon as my laptop comes in. I picked up a 2gb stick of patriot ram for 100 dollars and just replacing the 512 stick thats under the laptop. Didn't want to deal with the hassle of taking the keyboard out and what not now and who knows I could upgrade to 4 gigs later. So any memory from patriot, crucial, crosair, kingston is good.
