My notebook doesn't have a esata port (External SATA) and I'd like to hook it up to a big external hard drive when my notebooks at home.
Is it possible to somehow make use of esata even without a port? I've seen sata to usb2 adapters but i doubt this preserves the data transmission rate of esata since the maximum usb data transfer rate is << esata. Any ideas??

Just get an external enclosure that supports USB 2.0... Problem solved...

You can get eSATA adaptor cards for the PCMCIA / ExpressCard slot.
These should give the full SATA speed (certainly ExpressCard does since I have one). USB 2 is slow in comparison.
