So...I bought a the XPS M17170 (black)...I want to upgrade the ram since I only brought the lowest possible amount of ram which is 1 gig. Anyway, here is the listing:
1 311-5891 1GB,DDR2,667MHZ,2 DIMM,XM1710
Does that mean that I have 2 sticks of 512 ram? or 1 stick of 1 gig ram?
There's only 2 ram slots available right?
I'm looking to upgrade to 2 gigs...seems like I might have to sale those inorder to make space.
yep those were some stupid questions![]()

2 slots and you will have a 512Mb stick of RAM in each of them, that's what the "2 DIMMS" is telling you.
I could be wrong though about only 2 DIMM slots in this one, seems I read someone else somewhere else were saying this had 4 slots in it. I have my doubts though. -
according to the user guide, the XPS1710 has two slots (1 per channel). You'd have to get 2 new 1GB sticks to put in there to get 2GB. -
thanks.. appreciate the clarification. Are there buyers for 2 sticks of 512 mb ram since i won't be needing them
-
I doubt you will find a buyer for those since they are designed for a xps 170 and it is the default/lowest option. Put them in a box, and save them for if you ever need them on a diferent computer. I really doubt someone will buy, sorry.

i'm not quite sure I understand...how they're 'designed for a xps 170', isn't it just generic ram?
-
yes, it's just generic ram. the problem is that the config you'll be selling is quite popular and quite inexpensive so it's probably not worth your time to sell. just keep them in a drawer in case you need them for testing or to pop into another computer.

you could also throw them up on craigslist.org -- whenever I have something not worth selling on fleabay I put it on CL. Always sells... maybe not what you would hope to get, but it should sell. Check it out -- http://www.craigslist.org/about/cities.html
very very stupid ram question...
