i was wondering what people here set their virtual memory to on their dell laptops. I'm trying to find the best settings for my laptop. did I set the VM too high? it recommend me to set the intial memory at 3096.

    mine is at:

    int: 3096
    max: 6138

    with 2GB RAM

    thanks

I've always heard 2x your physical RAM and to set it to a fixed amount. Setting it to a fixed amount (min=max) prevents it from fragmenting all over your hard drive.

yes, i also heard of 2x your physical RAM, but curious to see what ppl set their's to. i didn't know about the fragmenting part. thanks for the info. also curious, do ppl create a separate partition and set their VM on that partition.

E.B.E. in his guide suggests that you do. you can read it here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=81828

If you have 2GB's of RAM, I wouldn't even use virtual memory. Or not very much at least. I usually turn off virtual memory when I defrag, It defrags your files better....

For normal stuff 2GB RAM is more than enough to run completely without any virtual memory; and it is faster. I run most of the time without a swap even with 1GB, I hardly get any VM errors.

But then again I don’t (cant) play games on my notebook.(Integrated GMA chipset  )

with 2GBs of RAM u may not really need to use virtual memory. Wit the virtual mem off everything is in RAM and executes faster.

however depending on the program u may need more space...developers...etc.

my recommendation is to set it at about 512MB, fixed. the variable size causes fragmentation based on the space available on the HDD.

also a fast HDD helps when using the swapfile.

I don't use any, my 2 GB of RAM is more than I ever need.
