Hello, I know it was here many times, but still, I m finding articles for both sides :-/ and that makes it really hard to make a decision.
My configuration:
C2D Penryn T8300 2,4GHz 3MBcache
4GB DDR2
320GB HDD 5400
256MB 8600 GT
1440x900
I would like to ask what would be the best OS to run on it, i.e. if Vista 32bit or 64bit. Im not planning on using any 64specific software.
1.) I read that running 32bit games and SW on 64bit OS is slower. Is that true?
2.) what will be the difference in performance overall? (eg. in Sysmark points)
I put some money into an extra GB of RAM (from 3to4) and dont want that to result in only 500MB more....If I bought it I would love to be using the system to my full potential. But on the other hand I dont want to have system on 64bit OS that would be running vast majority SW, that is on 32bit versions only, a little bit slower that normal 32bit.
what is the best way to go? thank you

what about using multiboot environment? (im not concearned with HDD space with 320GB HDD). combining XP32 and VISTA64?
or just running the rest under Virtual PC -
i believe you might have trouble finding drivers and compatible software on 64-bit windows.

I was in the same boat as you, because I'm looking at a notebook that has x64 Vista. I was worried mostly about compatibility with games and drivers. I was wrong, though. Take a look at these:

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...ta_1yr_x64.asp
They seem to be generally positive. Now, there are a lot of articles on Google that cite numerous problems with x64. But if you look closely, most of them were published when Vista was first released, when there actually were compatibility issues. I set my advanced preferences in Google to only show pages from the last 3 months, and most of the recent articles I found sounded much more positive.
I really wouldn't worry about it. You'll have an extra gig of RAM now, and you'll be ready for the future when/if x64 becomes even more mainstream. Oh, by the way, I decided to purchase the machine with 64-bit Vista, if that tells you anything. -
64bit is the wave of the future and more RAM the better. Vista x64 manages programs better even in x32 emulation. It can access greater than 4GB of RAM.

Before you make the leap, think about the peripherals you'll be using. Make sure that any scanners, printers, etc have 64-bit drivers available.
-
thanks for all the input. Ill make sure there are all drivers available before I undergo that shift in the system. Anyone has any more comments or advice?
-
There are extremely few compatibility issues and drivers are abundant. I am really surprised the x64 team hasn't jumped in here yet.
Simply search "Vista 64 bit" on the search button above and you will find many articles, one I know quite recently is a 'how to' with all the drivers listed for your system, the other being the thread for Team x64. -
team x64, i think i'm a member
when it comes to laptop it self, every driver required is available online. Only slight issue is that alps touchpad driver is really outdated.
other then taht everything is perfect, nvidia driver 174.85 really shines -
If I'm not mistaken I don't think there is any 64-bit verson of the Soundblaster Audigy HD software if you've opted for that with the 1530.
-
I think you should go for 32-bit because i heard some bugs and some slow downs happens in 64-bit versions. You have nice computer which can do good on 64-bit but like I said - Go for 32-bit it is more reliable and faster.
You probably wouldn't use the 64-bit version to its max so...
Good luck choosing anyway! -

and... something completely off topic...
I need to buy a 2GB stick of memory (ordered my lappy with 3GB, but I guess the 1530 only has two RAM slots right?) anyways, i'm not sure exactly on what type of RAM I should order... help please lol? I don't live far from NCIX so I just plan to go down there and pick it up

thanks much -
There's another thread that someone loaded Vista x64 on the m1530 and is happy with it. I'm thinking of the same but it's a hassle loading everything back

Anyone find a 64-bit version of Sound Blaster Audigy HD Software Edition yet?
