I bought a vostro 1400 in dec 2007 with no OS. (yesh we do have the option to nt have any OS)
i used partition magic to remove all backup partition and mediadirect partition.
now i want to restore everything (including partitions) to factory settings.. is there a way?
note: since i have no OS with this, i have no restore cd.

You should have a mediadirect cd. Install that.
The recovery partition is probably lost.
Nothing else i think you can do -

okay..thanks rubenvb.
but the mediadirect cd will reformat all partitions on the hdd. i think there's no way around that right?
ps : a qn about media direct....will it be able to detect files from an ext hdd? if it doesnt, then there;s no point for me to have it as all my stuff are in there!
thanks agn -
Reformat is required...
I don't know about the externam hard drive, but what i do know is that mediadirect has no purpose. Vista will boot equally fast, if not faster, can play more files, has better battery life, proper drivers (and Digital Vibrance!).
So just install Vista on one partition and perhaps have another data partition... thats all you need. -

thanks ruben. i think i will make do without the media direct then.
im using xp btw...will continue to stick with it for a while more.
thanks alot! -
I'm glad I got a higher capacity hard drive and kept the old one intact so I can always just swap it back in for a factory restore whenever I need to. Media Direct does detect files from USB sticks, external hard drives, etc.
Though since your not planning on installing it anyways.. it doesn't really matter. -
