I'm trying to solidify which laptop to purchase between Dell, HP, and Lenovo, each with its own pros and cons -- my main concern being getting XP over Vista.

On the Dell Vostro 1500 series my only concern is that they only offer 5400rpm drives instead of 7200. Anyone with a 1500 running XP able to confirm whether or not they can capture minidv through firewire without any dropped frames? Worst case I continue to capture to my external drive, but would love to confirm if the 5400rpm will work. Thanks!

That's a good question... I just upgraded my Sony Vegas to v8, and installed it on my Vostro 1500. I haven't yet tried to capture video, will likely do so in the next week or two. I first started capturing video with an desktop in 2001, with a n old HDD, long before I upgraded to a 7200 RPM drive. I had no problems then unless I tried playing MP3's and browsing the web while capturing. So I'm hoping my much newer 5400 RPM laptop drive is a bit quicker.

mux1, I'd appreciate in advance you taking the time to test out firewire capturing and reporting back any findings you might have. I have an old Inspiron 5100 where firewire capture usually resulted in dropped frames unless I used an external 7200 rpm drive. That hard drive itself is not sounding great these days and I'm expecting it to go out. If I have to buy another external because the internal won't cut it, I can live with that but I'd love to know in advance what I'm up against. Thanks!

Just in case anyone else might be searching for the same information, I've confirmed no dropped frames in doing a firewire capture on a Vostro 1500 with their standard 5400 rpm drive.

Just wanted to provide an update:

I've been able to capture DV from my older Sony cam and HDV from my newer Sony cam with no issues. I've transferred 4 hours of video over firewire with no problems (using Sony Vegas Pro 8).

    System: Vostro 1500 - T7300, 2GB DDR2, 120GB 5400RPM Drive, Vista
