    hi,
I'm talking to a CSR right now about a 1700 with t7700, wuxga, 2G, 120G, 8600M, bluetooth, 9 cell battery. To me it seems like a good price. Comments?

Although you have the T7700 as opposed to the T7300 I have on my comparable Inspiron 1720 (see my sig), you have a smaller HD, and the additional cost for the 9 cell battery and BT you're getting are more than balanced out by the Wireless N and DVD burner upgrades I have. My base price after coupons but before tax and credits obtained later was $1234, $477 less than what you're being offered.

Granted, prices have actually gone *up* since I ordered (and Inspiron-Vostro comparisions, while very close, aren't perfect), but I still think you could do better. The main question, though, is whether you really need the T7700. You're paying a pretty whopping premium for what isn't even the latest and greatest CPU anymore- Intel just revamped the Santa Rosa line and added faster processors. Interestingly, if you price out an Inspiron online, the difference between the T7500 and the T7700 is $75- for the Vostro, it's $275, which is outrageous. If you're set on getting the T7700, it looks like the Vostro is a particularly expensive way to do so.

I'd have to agree unless you have a specific need, the T7700 doesn't offer much over the T7300 given the cost of the upgrade.

i think i have pretty specific need. i'm running verilog simulations which tie up the cpu %100 for half hour or more everytime. %20 faster cpu helps in my case.

    i also got 160 G drive and dvd+rw dual-layer for a final of $1726.

Well then perhaps you do, but if the T7700 is 20% faster, your simulations would run in 24 minutes instead of 30 all things equal. Is that worth the cost of the upgrade? I don't know, not for me I think.
