No buy an inspiron then. Vostro is for Small Businesses. Inspirons have better deals anyway.

Dell has Small Business Financing, but you will have to provide a Tax ID which can be your social security # under a sole proprietorship, BUT they will verify that you are a legitimate business.

In other words, if you are not a legit business, you won't qualify.

Is there anyway to get them to give you normal financing on a Vostro at all?

My "business" is still in business plan and leg work phase. At present it's a team and an idea. Ok, the team is still being recruited so it's no one. But business is it's actual intended purpose. Mostly. o_O

If you don't have the capital to pay for the laptop, how do you have the capital to start a business?

It's so crazy, I get giddy thinking about it. But no I can get it, but with the "normal" financing it would be awesome. I just haven't got all officalized (not a word, but you'd get the idea) enough yet with TAX ID and all that stuff. It might be a few more months before that stuff forms up.

Yes, you can get Dell's "60 days same as cash" financing using your SSN only. My business is as small as it can get - myself only (sole proprietorship). I do business under my own first and last name. I use my SSN as Federal Tax ID. That's what I told Dell sales rep. And he was fine with that. The following day after the sale, Dell Financing called me, said they don't have employer tax id on my profile, and I stated once again - I do business under my own name and use my SSN as tax id - they we cool with that.

There is a catch though to this 60-days-same-as-cash offer: for one thing, if you don't pay off your purchase withing 60 days, you will be charged $70 (or somewhere around that) loan application processing fee. The other thing - their interest rate is astronomical. So, it's definitely NOT a good deal, unless you have all the intentions to pay it off withing 60 days.

However, it's worth doing their financing if they offer you some sort of incentives. The very first time you use it - you can get a really sweet deal. This was my second purchase using Dell financing, so all I was able to get was $15 off... still, better than nothing. I configured the system the way I wanted ($780 Vostro 1400) and called in to see if I can get any discounts. The rep looked over my order and said sorry buddy, this is as cheap as it gets. I said I hear you, it is indeed quite inexpensive for this kind of configuration, then I asked if they were offering any kind of incentive for using dell financing - at first he said they were not, since I had used it before, but then he offered me $15 off if I went with a lease. I said no thank you, here is my AmEx account. Then he said give me few minutes, let me talk to my supervisor... after alsmot 15 mins of holding and one call drop (he did call me back right away though) he finally said he can give me $15 off if I went with 60-days-same-as-cash financing. I was buying two laptops, so the total came to $30 and I decided to do it.

Finally, something that I wasn't happy about - when I put together the laptop I wanted to purchase and added it to my saved items and then later on to cart - Estimated shipping was showing 9/20. Then I called in, and the rep finalized my transaction (giving me the discount and 60 days financing) and the date changed to 9/26. I did not realize that right away, only noticed it when I went back to my account to check on status... Not sure why this happened - due to financing or what...
