while on the phone with dell yesterday i recieved some info from the escalations rep and also the gentleman i spoke with in the corporate offices..take this for what you will but it may or may not be true..

the vostro series notebooks are going to be sourcing almost strictly from here on out the dreaded auo screens. when they pull up a replacement parts screen on their end the only screen that comes up is the auo part number, the lg and sec are no longer even shown on the dell rep's end.. he read me off the complete list of part #'s and all were auo100X (3 different ones for say the 1500 and 2 for the 1400 etc...), now he said if they happen to be out of the auo at the time of production of your particular system then they may at thier will substitute whatever they can poss even upgrade some to the xga+ which he said they have already done at no charge at times...

the inspirons will not be using auo, they will be sharing the stage with the lpl and sec panels, when the inspiron 1520 say was pulled up the same auo part numbers were not shown on their screen, but now they showed 3 lpl #'s and 2 sec #'s.. again he said they will be able to change out as needed so some may at times in the 1520 get the auo or other screens..again same goes for the vostro series...

take this for what you will but this was told to me by 2 different sources that are higher up's at dell ... so imo when i reordered i went with the inspiron series to mainly try to avoid getting the same panel i had before which was the au1004 which he said was the standard panel now (there are 3 auo's but this is the first and most used on the list).

the 1400 and 1720 will be the same situation but with different part numbers of course. but i guess auo has been contracted as the main supplier for the vostro line now...

My order was in boxing starting Monday... just shipped today. I wonder if they fitted me with an AUO or an SEC panel. Didn't someone here say theirs just was received this week and they got an SEC panel?

From a business point of view, that doesn't make any sense whatsoever - makes me believe the Dell rep doesn't actually know what they're talking about which is not surprising at all. I have an LG on my Vostro and it's friggin beautiful :)

they were using all 4 brands prior.. this came from someone in corporate btw..

if this is true im betting that the auo screens cost dell less and thus the reasoning of using them in the vostro line.. i dont know for sure of course but just a thought

Well, I'm sure that's the case if this is true. Most people do not call and complain about the quality of their screen; the people here on this forum who are dissatisfied represent such a miniscule percentage of Dell's total customer base that they are not the least bit concerned about the issue going forward. Instead, they can save money using a cheaper LCD panel that most people are happy with, and that goes straight to the bottom line.

I also have the LG with no problems. I have a 14.5" wxga+ AUO on my D630 and it's also a nice screen. I'm wondering if AUO got so swamped with orders they loosened quality control in order to meet demand from Dell. I actually find it funny and that most of this was caused by kids being able to pick the COLOR of their laptop lid ... what a primary consideration in choosing your computer model! That's why HP has done so well with their technologically and structurally weak (but oh so pretty) consumer lines.

All I know is it's not necessarily the company, I have two 1420's - 1 with an AUO screen, and 1 with an LG and the AUO one is 10x better!
