what's the biggest difference between the two?

i just started school and need a laptop to fit my school AND gaming needs (mainly source games or FFXI), and need something a little lightweight and easy to carry around.

will this vostro 1400 be well enough, or should i just wait for another inspiron coupon?

Not sure if it's an option for you, but I'd want to bump up that video card to the 8600 GT, especially for gaming. I'd also try to up the hard drive to 7200 RPM.

Identical to Inspiron 1420 except for color, price and support.

8600GT is not available for Vostro 1400/ Inspiron 1420. Best option is 8400GS.
