Hi I have a vostro 1500 I recently ordered. I was disapointed by the fact it doesn't have a line input and was already looking toward purchasing a vista compatible external sound card. I need to send the red, white rca output from my dj mixer into my laptop. I already have a stereo rca to line input adaptor as well. I can't find any vista compatible cards that will allow me to do what I want except for the m-audio conectiv (which I plan to buy in the future for torq dj system).
But wait! If your right click the volume icon in the lower right taskbar > "Recording devices" look what pops up.
"Microphone/Line in"
"sigmatel high definition audio codec"
OMG OMG OMG can I use the mic input for a line in then without damaging it?
I know there is noting stopping it from fitting in correctly but I have heard if you use line in with a mic input it will eventually damage it because the impedance doesn't match up correct me if I am wrong?

On my m1330, when you insert the plug a window pops up asking if you have plugged in a mic, a line input, or rear speakers. The same socket works for all of them, but it can't tell so you have to tell it.
I would guess that the Vostro works similarly. -
Yes Vostro works the same way
vostro series mic input = line input as well!?
