It depends on how you use it. I think a 1-year is fine, but if you want the security blanket of knowing you can get it fixed for longer, than go for it. The accidental is usually a waste, unless you're of the clumsy type. You can get coverage from your insurance company for accidental damage and theft, which is generally cheaper than the plans offered by Dell and others.

good question, and an often asked one too. Here's a good thread where this was discussed:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=9486

One argument goes that if a laptop is going to choke due to bad parts, it'll do it in the first year and so all you need is a one year warranty.

However, if you like peace of mind and don't mind paying for that, then 3-years is worth it. I have had a laptop bust on me at precisely 1 year and one month, but it is true that a majority of the time a laptop lemon will break within the one year warranty.

I agree with Brian and Abaxter. It depends on your situation. For me I have 2 year plus accidental (i'm very clumbsy :) ) . Two reasons: a.) technology gets outdated so quickly, that anything happens after 2 years, I'll want to buy a new one. b.) i use my computer extensively. I spend anywhere from 12 to 20 hours a day on it, so its not something that I can live without. I eat and drink all the time around my laptop which is why i have accidental. Plus I've lost one laptop to a spilled drink.

With Dell, anything past 2 year warranty is pretty expensive and in my opinion not worth it. You can always get a 1 year or 2 year now, and once your warranty goes out, you can contact Dell and extend it. The link that abaxter posted has some good suggestions that are less expensive but give you the same type of coverage.

I personally went with 4 years with accidental and waited for the 35% coupon to do it. It's $260 more than 2 years. Accidental is $100 more than that.

    $260 * 0.65 = $169

Currently there's a $100 mail in rebate with 4 years.

    $169 - $100 = $69

So it was only $69 more for 2 more years of warranty which was well worth it and quite cheap. But that's only if you go for 35% off coupon.

    W/ accidental
    $360 * 0.65 = $234
    $234 - $100 = $134

Oh, also I asked the people prior to ordering and they said rebates in general don't work with coupons such as $750 off or 35% off.

However, rebate for warranty is somehow different so you can still redeem it. My packing slip says I have the rebate mail in form in there. When I called to change the shipping address, I asked if I had rebates, and the guy answered that my account shows I have a $100 mail in rebate to redeem with my warranty. The guy also emailed me a rebate form just in case but he said it should be in there.

Computer is due today or tomorrow and will mail rebate after that. Hope it works.

I also justified the 4 year plan due to the little cost. I will see if it's a mail in rebate or instant rebate. Since its a "premium" plan as I understand the accidental coverage was included in it. Am I wrong, or did I misread it? If so I will drop the coverage down a bit. Being in the service I really want the accident coverage.

The premium plan is instant rebate so price you see already has it discounted. Otherwise, originally it was $646. The 4 year ltd is the one with mail-in rebate. So should be price you see and $100 back when you send it in.

    Yes, premium has accident covered.

However, you're still paying a lot more for the online classes, better faster support, and lots of other crap which I figured are not useful at all.

I just wanted the warranty and accident coverage. I figured I can fix pretty much anything better than they can except for the hardware actually breaking/malfunctioning.

I believe this is not true. It's included in the 4 year premium plan or 3 year plus plan.

However, it is NOT included in the 4 year ltd warranty plan.

Ok, I went and checked. It cost me $30 after the % to get the top plan. I don't need much of the online crap, did't know it came with it. I will be calling from Korea so quicker phone support for hardware issues is a definate plus.

You can always get a Mack Extended Warranty. It's 3 years for only $100. A lot cheaper than Dell, HP, or any other warranties. Here's the link: http://www.mackcam.com/warranties/3yearintcomputer.html

I bought a laptop, didnt like it, so I gave it to my little sister- she has 3 solid years to destroy it. :D

How is safeware laptop insurance? I bought a e 1505 for my son who is leaving for college. I got the 4 year warranty from Dell, but since we are in Florida, we cannot get the damage warranty or Lojack. Safeware seems it covers what I cannot get from Dell. It would be $81.00 per year. Any one have any info it it is a good company and if in this situation, would be worth the extra money?? Thanks in advance!
