hi there. im running around the www, trying to get to know a litt better these two, but as i cant really touch neither before buying, i have to ask you, guys...
so, there it is: im a web solutions developer, web designer...i got the money, but i cant make a choice![]()
1.the lappy is to be used as the base computer, for local dynamic database websites developing, music, movies and the usual office package(doc, xls, pps, etc).
2.so the running services are: Apache/ PHP/ MySQL/ XHTML/ CSS/ JScript/ FLASH/ PhotoshopCS2/ 3dMAX7/ Bryce3D
3.i need a great screen colour, as good as posible so the pages are seen correctly
4.i will use the laptop basically indoor, take it out in the big city kind of once a week, so the battery is no matter to me, though the weight must be in the acceptable limits.
5.i dont like it get too hot, nor make annoying noise.
the 2 configurations are(i cannot change anything, its like take as it is):
e1405:Centrino Duo,T2050 - 1660Mhz,
WXGA+ UltraSharp TFT,TrueLife,14.1,1440 x 900,Intel Media Accelerator 900,
60GB,
512 (2 x 256),DDR2 533MHz,
Lithiu Ion,6 cells,
Windows XP Home
e1505:Intel Core Duo T2300 1660,
WXGA TFT, TrueLife 15.4 ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 HyperMemory,
80 GB,
1024 (2 x 512) Dual Channel DDR2 667MHz,
5-in-1 Card Reader,
Dell Wireless 350 Bluetooth 2.0,
Lithiu-Ion, 6 celule,
FreeDOS
so, the Q are:
1.is there a noticeble difference between their weight?will i feel it on my shoulder when carry it?
2.what about the screen?'WXGA TFT, TrueLife' vs 'WXGA+ UltraSharp TFT, TrueLife'...which one looks better in day2day use?i know it is a matter of taste and subjective, but how confortalbe are the 2 in the daylight?what abut night?
so my obvious Q is: wich one?
e1405:a litt bit lighter, better screen(as in the specs)
e1505:double the RAM size, way much better video system.
thx for reading this. if you are a 1405/1505 usr, can you share the experience a litt bit? about the weight, screen and the general performance(can you mention the applications that you use, so i can compare?)
-
oh, i forgot to mention: i use an inspiron 1300 celeron based, with 512Mb of ram and nothing special... i love the keyboard.
i got another Q: whats the normal temperature for the processor on a dell?in iddle i got 48-49(celsius) - 120(fahrenheit), in normal use 51-52(c) - 126(f) and in full load 58(c) - 136(f).
these values are for inspiron 1300, using the i8kFan.
how about e1405 and e1505? -
There is going to be a significant difference in weight, and you will be able to feel it. The e1405 has a smaller screen and thus the whole system is smaller/lighter.
Since you want good screen color, get the upgraded screens with TrueLife. Both the models you have selected have upgradable screens.
You will be able to upgrade the system ram on either model whenever you want. The GPU is something you cannot upgrade if you opt for the e1405, since it is integrated. For the web design work you are doing, integrated graphics will be just fine. -
E1505 has available 1680x1050 screen unlike E1405.
-
mixed feelings here...
i think i go with the 1405, and upgrade it with another 1GB of ram in a couple of months or so... i can live without 'great graphic card'...it wont run windows vista aero, but who needs it?
for another 2-3 years....

E1505 has 15.4" screen, so pixel size is roughly same as one on 1440x900 and 14".
Thing is that Vista is OS for next 4-5 yrs, why wouldn't you want to have full support for it? -
I have a write up on the E1405 in my sig. It may help some. Other wise if I were you I would go with the E1505 if portability is not as important. I love my small 14 inch screen with the Ultrasharp. It is capable of 1440 x 900, this resolution makes lots of stuff fit on the smaller screen and I love it!!! Its up to you and good luck.
Edit: also I do webdeveloping too and you dont need a facny video card for flash, cold fusion, or php... you get the idea. -
I own an E1505, and I do a bit website developing, among other things on it, and Its really a great all around system. Its not that heavy, I like it since its big enough to be a comfortable system on my desk, and small and light enough to take with me places. I almost got hte E1705 but price and the fact its very large and wont fit in most hotel room safes made me choose the E1505.

i made some research and i realised that in 2 years from now this core duo processor will be so old!!!!...kind of like a celeron nowadays.
why?because amd already have their x64 x2, which is like having 2 powerful 64bit processor in a laptop, so centrino duo is more like a wood bridge between pentium M and the next generation notebook processor. next year i think everyone will look for 64bit processors(esp. with vista comming into the market) so...why invest into a big one like e1505?
actually was airforceone(great review, btw, thx 4 the infos) who opened my eyes about e1405, with his review tat i read yesterday( here).i simply love that display, heard some bad things about that glow technology, too, but, all in all..... in webdevlopment i guess thats so much more important than a powerfull video.
ps: not to say that e1405 is cheaper by $150...(well, just $100, i WILL have to buy 1G ram...) -
amd64 has been here for 3 yrs, and barely anybody uses 64-bit OS. It is not going to change in 2 years - maybe in 4 it will. Since Vista will have 32-bit edition, I can bet that OEMs will go for it because compatbility reasons.

considering this domain field - webdeveloping...i guess you are wright, but i would wild guess and say 3 years, not 4. but consider the fact that at the end of this month intel releases the core duo - 64b, 2 years is a legitimate guess.
but considering the need for webdeveloping, 3 years will do...
webdeveloping - e1405 or e1505?
