ok first off, i have had my m1530 for like 4 days now.

So, when i open my computer and you can see all the drives and my c: drive says how much free space. So after i put all my stuff, music, games, school documents, etc. when i first got the laptop my hard drive said there was about 125 gbs of free space out of 173 gb.

then later in the day after using my computer and not installing anything it went down to 117, thats over 5 gigs that i didnt put on. i started watching it and the next day it went down to 108 gbs. and i dont think its updates because i turned off the automatic windows updater/installer thing. so i am kind of worried about this, because i definitely didn't put almost 20 gigs on my computer within this time, maybe 500 mb. maybe.

what do you think about this? is it common? is there something i can do?

google for vista system restore and shadow copies.

Its natural behaviour, but you can turn it off.

mc1 thanks much, it jumped up to 130 gbs. so is it pretty safe to turn it off or do most advise against it?

Unless you're running out of hard drive space, I would leave system restore running on your system. It does eat up space, but it may save you from a problem in the future. You can always choose to delete all but the most recent restore point if you run disk cleanup.

ok i will turn it back on, at least i know what was happening though. it doesnt seem like it should take up so much space though, doesnt seem efficient.
