Kitting: grouping parts/components together for production assembly.

Kitting means you're floating, you arent on the tables being put together yet, you're still half a man floating around looking for your *****.

There was a link posted about Dell's desktop production line, but I can't find it now. But kitting just means they get all the parts together to assemble them in the case.

You are only in kitting for a short period. Even if they are out of parts, you go into build.

I was waiting on a hard drive. They came in, but then they were out of batteries. So it seems that all parts have to be in stock at the same time for them to actually build a computer.
