hi there everybody!
ok here whe are again the eternal quadro for gaming question
ok so i am getting a dell M70 and i was wondering what kinda of gaming performance increase i can expect from it over my radeon 9800 pro (128mb)?
i know some of you will say i should get something else for gaming but my laptop will also be used to work with Autodesk inventor and MastercamX wich is the reason i am getting a m70, so since i am getting rid of the current desktop to get the laptop i was wondering what would be the boost gaming wise that ill see.
so i have a
Athlon xp tbred 2400 (2.00ghz)
1gig ddr333 (2x512 in dual channel)
pata 40gig 7200rpm dma133
Radeon 9800pro (128mb)
the m70 is
P-M 770 (2.13ghz)
2gig ddr2 533 (2x1gig in dual channel)
sata 80gig 7200rpm
Quadro FX go1400 (256mb)
what i am actualy looking for is a % reference in gaming boost performance such as "i can expect a ~20% boost in gaming" or whatever that boost could be

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
From some quick Googling it seems like like 1400 is almost twice as fast as the 9800 so I'd wager the entire setup should be about twice as fast well. On the other hand, the M70 is pretty old now (like three generations of Precision), why aren't you looking at an M4300 or M6300? You could probably benefit from a C2D just as much as a faster GPU.

yes well the budget is my limitation ~850$cnd and the 4300 and 6300 is off chart for my budget as for getting a laptop with a gaming card that could do the job the 850$ limit i keeping me in the range of the intel x3100 or nvidia 6150 or 7150 and Ati x11xx to x14xx wich is not a good choise for the application of the laptop even on the gaming side and as for used stuff like the m70 i am getting thats the best deal i was able to find wich was a compromise between the cad/cam side and game side

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
EDIT: I lied; just checked dell.ca and the D630 and D830 start at over a grand in CDN -
yeah i tought about those to but as you said at over 1k without taxes (~12%) and the problem is that dell.ca have ****ty coupon... max i can get is 100$ off
edit: the fx1400 might have an edge over the nvs140 in the memory bandwith departement with 256bit vs 64bit
here is the lowest i could go with the d630 to gat a system that would have had similar performance to the m70 but it comes with a nvs135m and would be 1250$ before taxes so with taxes and coupon it would come to ~1400$

hey i have just checked the bios of the dell go6800 and the go1400 i tought that both where nv41 core but when you check the bios of the go6800 it says nv42 can anybody confirm this
-
ok well just wanted to do a follow up, i got the m70 two days ago and to be honnest it is quite impressive, stalker is playable with max setting in 1280x768 with dinamic lightning and with mid to high setting in 1920x1200 but with static lightning, the screen as a bit of leakage but its only visible on black background and i have ~7 dead pixel but they are only visible if you take the time to look for them
i havent tryed any lv2g driver and i am quite happy so far with the standard dell go1400 quadro driver (v84.30) the laptop also as a dell complete care warranty available until nov/5/2008
anyway one thing is for sure it sure beats my desktop in all departement
also the quadro does a wonderfull job with inventor and mastercam but for simple part there is not much of an improvement over the 9800pro but i guess it will be another story with complicated assembly. -
I have a Precision M4300 and I think your FX1400 is a better gamer than my Quadro FX 360m, because the 360m is just an 8400m GS with 64 bit memory. It does not do well in FPS games etc. If your M70 works for you, stick with that. There is a reason that Dell named the next Precision line the M65 (D820 based, Quadro FX 350m), that is because I think the FX1400 was actually more powerful graphics wise, so Dell didn't want to name the Precision M65 with a higher number.

well wanted to let you know how it goes performance wise
tryed a few tweak on the gpu side to enhance the performance here is the result so far
go1400-default speed 275/590-dell 84.30= 42 630 aquamark
go1400-O\C 300/606-dell 84.30= 46212 aquamark
go1400 with nvstrap to go6800-O\C 300/606-dell 84.30= 47767 aquamark
go1400-O\C 300/606-XTreme-G 169.28 XP 32bit Beta= 47423 aquamark
the reason i went back and did not do a test with the XTreme-G and nvstrap is that nvstrap does not support standby so when you close the lid od the laptop and then open it back you have to reboot as it wont come back from the stanby state, sad that it does not work as from what i can see it could maybe get another 1000 aquamark or so wich would mean a ~15% increase in the aquamark point, the card could still overclock a bit but unfortunatly the problem is the cooling factor as allready at 300/606 playing R6 vegas2 the card peaks at 71c and cpu at 64c wich is a bit high but ill try to up the mem, as the mem can probably go up a bit more and not create to much heat contrarly to core overclocking.
after that the only upgrade vi can see would be to switch the cpu for a lower 100fsb cpu and pin mod it to 133fsb wich could give me a boost of a few hundred mhz in the cpu department but for now i think ill gain more with a gpu upgrade
i am also contemplating the idea of switching the go1400 for a go7800gtx as the switch would not be that expensive when you consider that ounce the go1400 sold back my precision m70 with 7800gtx upgrade would have come to about 1100$ cnd and i think that the 7800gtx will offer me similar performance in the opengl as the go1400 while boosting dramaticly my gaming capacity and i do not think i could get as good performance for the same price from a new laptop in the same form factor, 15.4inchs wusxga screen.
ps: about selling back my go1400 i was wondering if 200$ would be a good price since its a pro card with still pretty good performance compared to the current entry level pro card
edit: well raising the mem to 630 did not produce much of a boost ~200 aquamark more -
Those scores are significantly better than the Quadro FX 350m or 360m, or Quadro NVS 110/120/135/140m.
Also checking this link which is VERY good:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-of-Grafic-Cards.130.0.html
The FX go1400 is in tier 2, which is fairly good, especially given that the card has been around quite a while now.
The Quadro FX Go1400 is based on the Geforce 6800 so honestly is nearly as good as a 7800 card, I'd suggest using Geforce drivers if you weren't already (i can't tell if you used the geforce drivers or quadro drivers), and do a mild overclock. I have a Quadro FX 360m and would kill for graphics performance like yours haha. The upgrade you mentioned though if you're talking about $200 US is a fair price, though not a great one. Is that price the net price after you sell the Go1400? I'd try and find a deal where an upgrade would be around $100 or less AFTER you sell the Go1400, as you probably could get a fair amount for the Go1400 if you list it well on ebay or similar.
I'm pretty sure that your Go1400 has DDR3 memory? Or am i wrong -
Yes 256mb ddr3@256bit and currently i am using XTreme-G 169.28 XP 32bit Beta driver, i wich nvstrap would not affect stanby as this would give one nice boost, at least in benchmark
I wonder never had to bother with this but can you flash a dell go1400(nv42) with a dell go6800(nv42) bios?
also i wonder why my go1400 as 8 / 5 Pixel- / Vertexshader while on notebookcheck its listed as 12 / 5 Pixel- / Vertexshader i wish i had those 4 pixelshader -
I wouldn't flash it as there's no reason to do so. You can simply use the go6800 driver which makes it in effect just that - a go6800. I didn't know that nvstrap adversely affected standby and power features. You may want to try the 174.xx series XP drivers on laptopvideo2go - not sure if it will help but it might. Hmm...that is interesting about the shaders though. In what program did you see your card listed as 8/5? I am assuming Rivatuner. Rivatuner HAS been wrong with a few GPUs before with specs and even memory type especially with rarer GPUs like yours - so best way might be to search up your specific part - I'd try support.dell.com forums.

from what i heard and from what i see in the inf file of the 84.30 driver from dell both go1400 and go6800 use the same driver the only difference is that at installation the driver will be installed with a different set of feature depending on the id of the gpu, wich is why nvstrap loads before the windows kernel to mask the go1400 id with the id of the go6800 wich is why i am talking of flashing the bios as i could then load the bios with a different id.
