Hi all,
I'm torn between 2 laptops: the Dell X1 and the Sony SZ240.
I've already read the reviews on this site and on several others, but I'm hoping someone who knows something about X1s or has used one/owns one can give me some feedback about what they thought of them.
Can anyone convince me why I should get the X1 over the SZ240 (apart from the X1 being lighter weight)?
Thanks!

the x1 is a rebranded samsung q30.
you can google for reviews of that model for more info.
samsung has updated the q30 to the q35, but i don't know if that means dell is going to update their model as well. -
I just want to know what people think of the X1. Enjoy it? Don't enjoy it? Anything bother you about it?

One of the grad students in our lab has an X1, it's a nice little machine, was thinking about getting one myself until I got the XPS M170. There was nothing really great that stood out about the X1. I wanted a larger gamming rig to replace an older laptop then get a smaller one for work. The M170 spoiled me, the X1 felt SO slow in comparison and I couldn't adjust.
Anyways I shopped around, played with all the ultra portables I could get my greasy mitts on and settled for the SZ160. If you have the $$$ I highly recommend the Sony.
Have you had the opportunity to use both? -
I've seen and tried out the SZ and liked it, but I've heard bad things about Sony's quality of product and customer service, which is what makes me reluctant...additionally, a lot of people have said that it's just so overpriced for what you get. I don't have a price cap on what I can spend, I just want to get the best thing for my money, so that isn't an issue for me.
I haven't been able to get to a Dell kiosk to try out the X1 yet, but I'm going to try to get to one on Monday.
I don't do any gaming, I just need a simple machine for word processing and surfing the internet, listening to some music occasionally.
So you'd recommend the Sony over the Dell? You dont think their quality issues are a concern? Thanks! -
Well I can't tell you which one to get because I have not tried out the Sony but can tell you about my experience with the X1.
My buddy owns an X1 who runs his own computer repair business. He gets a lot of laptops in that we like to test out. However, since he bought the X1 I couldn't believe how small it is. THe first time I saw it I swore it could fit in my pocket.LOL Not quite but pretty small. All of this is great when you want to go portable. Traveling with this thing in one handed is not a problem. Some of those bigger laptops might require a much stronger grip and hand.
So as you can see the X1 is small but there are a few things that I didn't like about. When using a laptop I usually set it on my lap and not on a table or desk. With the x1 this is pretty hard for me to center between my legs. THe laptop is just not heavy enough for it just to sit there and feel comfortable. It requires tensions from your wrists and if you have a watch on you worry about scratching it. So I usually just sat it on a table or the bed. I noticed when I set it on the bed it got fairly warm. Warm enough for it to feel uncomfortable with the touch of a hand. Another thing I didnt like about it was the speed. Although speedy enough for web surfing, email, and other light task it couldn't ever be a photoshop editing machine.
Personally I would never buy an X1 for more than a portable web surfing machine for the car or for when I travel because I like to work on webpages and am a Network Administrator. This requires quite a bit of screen real estate for remote into computer and going through databases. Another thing you may notice is well is that the CD Drive is seperate and does not come installed in the laptop which is ok if you use a cd drive emulator. Battery life was fair.
Good: Nice Screen, Small Design and Light in Weight, Battery
Bad: Width for "Lap"Top use, Gets Warm, No CD Drive Attached
In Conclusion, I would take a look at the XPS1210 if looking for more power but if you are just looking for something lightweight that does light tasks and feeds the need for websurfing I would go with the X1. Although I had bad things about the Dell I could honestly say 9/10 you are going to get use to the Dell and the quality of Sony will die out before the Dell. Just my .02 from a friend of a many computer repairmen.
what do you think of the x1?
