if i get a 3 or 4 yr warrenty i can get 35% off my computer. in addition, i get a rebate if i upgrade to 3 ($150 rebate) or 4 ($200 rebate) years. is it worth it to pay that extra amount though?

what is covered under the warrenty? what is included in it (like any antivirus subscriptions for example)? and is dell usually nice about honoring their warrenty or are they jerks and find any way/excuse to weasel their way out of fixing my stuff?

Take a look at the warranty guide to see a general guide on warranty information. I don't think a 4-year warranty is worth it, but a 3-year maybe if you intend to use the laptop for that long. Dell is pretty good at fixing things in my opinion, they don't cover the laptop for accidents (no basic warranty does) but they do cover for manufacturing or hardware issues that arise.

i do plan on using the laptop for 3 years, and 4 if it can still keep up with normal computing use (internet, word processing, music and movies) 4 years down the road.

The warranty only covers hardware defects and such. Software is not covered, nor is spills, thefts, fire, drops, etc.

Bascially Dell only covers what they can determine broke because of them or their hardware.

Still, 3/4 year is isn't really worth it. Normally all problems occur in the first year, plus you can always extend your warranty at a later date (as long as your warranty hasn't expired).

I got a 3yr warranty with my E1705. I think it's worth it. On my old lappy (not Dell) weird things started happenning after about 2yrs of use - wireless stopped working properly, RAM started dying... IMHO if you plan to use the laptop for 3+ years then it's worth it. 4 - probably not.
