My 1420 is currently being assembled and will be arriving near the end of July. I really want to start having fun on it right away, but it seems like the consensus here is that I should start by reformatting the HD and reloading Vista.

The thing is, I haven't reformatted a HD in years and I'm fairly (65-70%) sure I'd screw it up some way or another. Also, I ordered the notebook with Microsoft Office Student Edition and I'm not sure if I'll get a retail disc to load it from after formatting.

So, I've got to figure out exactly how much unecessary software will be on the system and whether it'll be worth the time to reformat. Phobos, in his epic 1420 thread, said he wasn't going to bother with it, but I'm just farming out for opinions.

I ordered the 1420 with Vista Premium, Office Student, and no other software of any kind.

If you didn't select the "no software" options wherever possible, I can't tell you much.

But I encountered Google Desktop and Toolbar, McAfee Security Center Trial, Installshield Program Update Manager, and some Dell provided software that's more geared to new users like the Game and Photo organizer tool. All in all there was very little to remove. There wasn't even a copy of AOL, amazing.

It depends on what part of Dell you ordered it from. I'm not sure if things have changed much or not, but it use to be if you ordered it from Home, you received a ton of junk. If you ordered it from small business, you received no junkware.

You will recieve a disc that contains the software that you paid for. Dell generally includes extra discs that contain drivers, Vista, and the junk software in case you want to reformat.

There are several guides on the web that give step by step details on how to format. I've got a guide on formatting w/ XP which should be similar to Vista installation, but i'm not 100% sure (i'm sure our users could confirm this though).

if your not really up to the reformat/reinstall deal

just go to control panels and uninstall the stuff you don't want.
and then do some disk defrag

that should definitely be enough for the average user.
