I spoke with a dell technician that said the notebook is almost 100% plastic. I'm looking all over and I can't really tell which part is plastic and which is alloy. Does anyone know for sure which parts are in fact metal? thanks

AFAIK the part marked in red is magnesium alloy, cos a friend of mine dropped his notebook and the area marked in blue got deformed (but didn’t crack or break like plastic) then he bent it back using a plier. Therefore the blue area is definitely magnesium alloy; then I marked the rest of the frame which looks to be a single part containing the blue area in red.

No, not in the least. I don't know much about XPS series nor M1210 in specific. Owning one doesn't make you know everything :p . Just telling some of my experiences. I could be wrong about the magnesium thing, I mean the whole red area may not be made out of the alloy. Because it may not be a single part.

The casing that holds the screen in place is definitely plastic--when the tech came out to replace it, he explained that they sent a new front casing because it almost always breaks (!) when you remove it to access the screen. Sure enough, it snapped in half when he pulled it off (yes, I had a few moments of panic). Also the piece at the top of the keyboard (where the logo is) is definitely plastic. Any real metal I would say would probably be in the base--it definitely sounds different if you tap it on the side or bottom as opposed to the top or around the keyboard. Good question, though--let us know if you find out something for certain.

the left side of the palmrest is lined with magnesium alloy above the harddrive (I got to see it apart today ) also the mousepad also is backed up with alloy while the right side of the palmrest is only plastic
all the internal supports are alloy as well as the base and most of the top
all and all it is very sturdy the only thing I found deficient IMHO is the harddrive caddy the harddrive is held in with plastic rails but it works so i can't complain too much
