At this point with me finding the resolution on a Macbook too crap and not being able to find a X61, I'm considering a Dell XPS M1330.

First things first : durability is the most important factor to me. I've read good and bad things here and there concerning the XPS M1330 and it's poor monitor, but apparently it's been fixed and if I ordered one right now, my monitor should be fine.

I travel A LOT and will be traveling quite often if I get the M1330.

So I'd like to know....what were some accidents that you went through with your M1330 and it still manages to function? Were any pieces broken immediately? Did the hard drive continue working?

The m1330 has a WXGA (1280x800) resolution. The same as a Macbook.

I was reading an article yesterday on these forums about some guy who had his M1330 fall off of a table and had no problems afterwards

Mine has fallen off about a 4 foot table onto our wood flooring, expected the worse but only found a couple of scratches on the lid everything else is perfect!
none the less I try and pay alot more attention to how its sitting .Even if i DO have CC I dont want this one to break!!

After comparing the solid feel of a D630 to a M1330 I have to say the M1330 doesn't feel super durable... despite Dell's claims.. their's quite a bit of plastic around the screen etc... its not made to be a rugged business laptop.. but built like a media friendly home laptop...

The D630 on the other hand feels like a rock
    I wouldn't buy the M1330 for durability..

I dropped mine from a height of 3 feet onto wood flooring. It works fine, and it only has some scratches on the one corner it landed on.

Mine fell off a 3 foot high counter onto a tile floor. Hinges were broken only, but everything else was functioning. Luckily I had CC :)

Because people buy the m1330 for it's looks......not because it's the most durable laptop available.

i did some gaming with the laptop closed and connected to my TV - when i opened it back up the bit of the palm-rest covering the hard-drive had got really hot and burnt the screen.

(replaced free of charge by Dell)

    PS:

you mean your hand, but sure.

I wont buy a M1330 for reliability and robustness.

Both my D630 and D420 is leagues ahead in terms of robustness - at least perceived robustness (the feel, the lack of flex, plastics..).

If you can wait, get the new Latitude E4300 in June/July thats suposely a close match to the M1330 with the 13.3" screen and possibly a WXGA+ and a little lighter.

mine keeps getting covered with dust.

then when i use the cloth to clean it off it just spreads it around to other areas.

First I havent had any accidents with my new xps m1530 I would like to say this: my last laptop was a Toshiba and it lasted 4 years until my wife stripped over the power cord, breaking the lcd screen. after i bought my new m1530 my co-worker pointed out his disapproval with the power cord, i guess Macs have a "magnetic" power cord which would virtually eliminate the previous issue I went through. Just food for thought.

The M1330 is more durable than it looks. It's not one you'd wanna trying standing on or driving over, but mine has taken several falls in its bag and its been hit with toys and a ball before, never a problem.
