I thought i had everything finally set regarding my driver problems and all that, but turns out, once i installed AIM, my connection status and folders networking folders in control panel all got screwed up... WHY!? this is really annoying, 3rd time i've reformatted in 2 days. is there a way to fix this without reformatting/reinstalling? i even uninstalled AIM...nothing.

Do you get a server execution failed error message when you move your mouse over the network system tray icon on the far right side of your taskbar?

You can't AIM at Vista! You can only Live with Vista!

Crazychu, try doing this before resorting to another reformat:

    1.Hold Windows Key+R.
2.In the run window that pops up, type CMD. Press Enter.
3.In the prompt that comes up, type this exactly:

    Net localgroup Administrators localservice /add

4.After restarting your computer, all the networking and wireless functions in vista should work once again.

Please note that this is not an acceptable workaround for your problem. Adding the Admin group like that is a HUGE security risk. Please don't inform users to do this fix without informing them of the implications.

Granted, but the op requested if there is any possible fix for this issue that it be posted. And at the moment the aforementioned change does get rid of the problem at-hand.

i also had similar network issues with vista, but i wasn't sure what was causing it. I reformatted 3x and each time after awhile, the problem would surface again. Is aim really the cause of it?

Anyhow, my solution was going back to windows xp, even tho i really wanted to give vista a shot

I too had this problem with the new aim. Adding the admin group solved the issue completely for me. It was a huge relief.

can you explain why i'd be a huge security risk? what can i do to protect myself?

i just did it and it works! but how does adding an admin group fix this?

This solution seems to be fixing a lot of people's computers with the same problem

i can guarantee you that this does not work completely and i have proof. i run a utility called samurize that does things like use WMI to access hardware data. after stupidly installing AIM, i was looking for a fix. i came across this so-called "fix" of adding the Admin group and tried it to see the results although it was quite obvious that it was a bad idea. lo and behold, after applying the "fix", the obvious problems went away, but all of the readouts in samurize that used WMI to access data were still error'd out. this shows that the "fix" above does not work and that something was still accessing and locking out certain WMI interfaces.

please note that there is a difference between a WORKAROUND and a FIX. what is suggested is a WORKAROUND, not a FIX because it does not fix the actual problem; instead, it allows the user to apparently "bypass" the problem when in reality the fix opens up a huge security hole by giving administrator privileges to low level system processes.

the only fix i found was a complete reinstall which i did a few days ago. prior to reinstall, i performed repair via the OS disc and i started running into little problems (specifically with previously installed apps like daemon tools) so i just reinstalled.

dunno about the reversing...but i just noticed that we have the exact same 1520 setup (minus the color). i did both of these steps below at the same time on my comp and one of them fixed it. i would def try the hotfix first and if that doesnt fix it atleast you know the other will.

    strt>run>cmd

net localgroup Administrators /add Local Service

    or

    windows hotfix

    Bumping the thread guys...

My girlfriend did this and her vista screws up too. She rolled back as far as she could, and it fixed the red X...but AIM won't load at all.

    Any ideas?

only older versions of AIM screw it up. if you stick to the AIM 6+ (the new UI) you will be fine.
