    whats dell doing about the defective GPUs?

    Of course all of you have heard about the defective Nvidia GPUs which have affect most of dell's line up. I know they have put up revised BIOS but really thats just to make the fans kicking earlier. this whole thing has pretty much explained why my GPU was hitting 95C under gaming conditions (yes constant BSoD). even with my newly bought zalman nc 1000 cooler and constant dust cleaning its still running the in mid 80s. I really fear that my GPU will just die on me right after my warranty expires in a month or so. so whats dell doing for the customers in response to all this? you think I can send my machine in to have the GPU replaced before its broken? or can I make them extend the warranty?

    Definitely take advantage of what's left of your 1 year warranty. Constant BSoD is a defect. Take a look at this page: Dell's Online Policies

    I heard that the newer m8600GT GPU's don't have the issues anymore. Take that with a grain of salt, though. Dell may even replace the GPU with a refurbished one which may die a year later past your warranty. You should take advantage of what's left of your warranty and possibly extend your warranty.

    All they've done is BIOS upgrade, which is useless and only prolongs currently fine and well GPUs that are defective. It doesn't do anything to GPUs already hit by the defective problem.

    All they can do is replace your motherboard/GPU if you are under warranty, but if you are out of warranty, they do nothing. You can't really extend it... so... yeah, its not good. Best thing is to use your current warranty to replace if you still have it.

    Nvidia has set aside 200 million for this problem that manufacturers can use.. but I doubt it is enough. The blog www.direct2dell.com mentioned they will make another post on the GPU problem... but that has yet to arise and if they will even take any further action is really unknown at this point.

    The lack of information and compensation to those affected is quite disturbing. :(

    I know what you mean.

    Dell is trying to show its good face right now by recognizing the problem and providing a "fix." The flipside to this is that, well, if your GPU is defective it's bound to break -- this fix may just prolongs its life by a margin. Perhaps beyond your warranty. And as Forte mentions, you're pretty much screwed by then -- Dell wins.

    Here's hoping that Dell provides a more solid solution and one that's less hackish.

    There are way too many threads on this topic. Seriously, someone mad a general discussion topic for the faulty GPU's as posted above. Stop clogging the forums.
