That is not a ugly gaming laptop (i use it for work 99% of the time)
but has 2 hdd bays, 2720QM cpu, a 1080p screen (1200p would be nice but i know i can forget about that one) and if possible a Optimus enabled gpu? (so that the dedicated gpu can be switched of 99% of the time) or even without a dedicated GPU..

It really seems that dell just doesn't have a successor of my current Vostro.. its just impossible to get? Or am i mistaken?

If by ugly you mean the lights on Alienware, then XPS or Inspiron may be your best bet (not sure if Inspiron allows i7 2720 though)

When it comes to XPS 17's, if you want a 1080p screen, your only choice is one of the two 3D models, which of course means no Optimus (from what I understand, it's hardware based and impossible to enable on the 3d models; same with widi)

If your requirements are unmoveable and you gotta have Optimus, you may be better off ordering a non-3D model and attempting to swap the screen out.

Just be aware that only 3D models have 4 DIMM slots; non-3D models only have 2 DIMM slots. Not sure about HDD bays though - I know the 3D model does, but I'm not sure about the non-3D models

Inspiron/Vostor is not an option because that those don't have a screen bigger then 900p..

So if i drop Optimus, then the 3d screen XPS17 is the only thing that could work if they had 2 hdd bays (i can't see that on the configuration page)
I don't care about 2 dimm slots, yes 4 is nice, but 2x4GB is fine by me.

Offhand, I think the non-3D also has 2 HD bays

But as for screen, XPS 15 has a 1080 screen, but when it comes to XPS 17, only 3D has 1080 option.

If you post in the XPS forums, they can probably tell you more than I can, since I haven't gotten my hands on my XPS 17 yet

If you want what is available right now, the XPS 17 is your only choice ... from Dell.

However, it sounds like the Dell Precision M6600 Workstation may be for you, it is expected to ship in April. The Workstation class laptops have dedicated gpu's and I don't expect Optimus will be supported. Since this is for work I believe this will be a better fit for you if you can wait.
