Hi. I'm buying a dell vostro tomorrow and I really can't make up my mind; should i take the WXGA or the WXGA+, both with truelife.

I'm worried the wxga+ will be to small, but I now that in xp i can enlarge the icons and text easily, is this easily done in vista as well?

which screen should I pick (price is no issue here)

    rest of config:

    2.2 ghz
    2 gb ram
    8400gs
    bluetooth
    n-card
    6cell
    home premium
    160 gb hard drive (5400)
    webcam

price: 1563 us dollar (somewhere near that price)

according to most people here, you'll have less issues(mainly issues with it being grainy) by going with the wxga screen

I went with the wxga on my 1400 and it should be here the coming tuesday or wednesday

    How is that relevant?

Even if you get the wxga+ with the larger possible screen resolution, you don't have to run it at that resolution. Unless I misunderstood you.

Anyway, I had the same choice and went with the WXGA, its cheaper, supposedly has less issues and has a max resolution higher than what I need anyway.

I know you said price isn't an issue but i'll just throw it out there that getting 2gigs of ram and upgrading it yourself cost about 40-50 bucks compared to 150 bucks to upgrade 1gig to 2gigs from dell. I just ordered a pair of cosairs for my vostro 1400 from outpost.com for 41 bucks after rebate.

Upgrading is really easy on the 1400 because both ram slots are right in the back of the computer covered only by a small screwed on cover. Again, im just throwing it out there, i know some people don't like with messing with their computers

I live in norway, I am ordering in Norway and the prices are very different. so in this case price isn't really an issue.

I know I can lower the screen resolution, but it won't look good. all I can do the is ctrl - + to enlarge the letters in internet explorer, and maybe enlarge letters and icons, but a part of the problem is I don't know how that works in vista. does anyone happen to know that, it would really be a lot of help =D

I currently have a laptop with a 12.1" WXGA display, which is about the same resolution (in dpi) as the 14" WXGA+, and I'm very happy with this resolution. It's not too small for me, and I like the very clear and sharp appearance.

And if it is too small, in Vista it's easy to adjust the overall font size (go to Control Panel, or right-click desktop -> Personalize -> Font Size). You can choose any DPI value, not only 2 or 3 predefined values like in XP.

So I'd definitely go for the WXGA+ if I had to choose.

I went with WXGA on my 1400 because I got tired of gambling for a good screen with Vostro 1500, I did not want the same issues with my 14.1" XGA+ so I opted for the WXGA.

just so everyone knows, you can not run a high res screen at a lower res. it will look like crap. you can however, change the dpi which is the size of the fonts, and it will not look like crap. just my two sense.

    There is no safe bet.

I just got my Vostro 1400 with WXGA screen.

It's LG and It sucks so much balls compared to the screen in my HP Dv12500T which is SEC.

I will post some pictures in a bit.

The whites on the HP are SO BRIGHT WHITE. No sign of grain ANYWHERE!!!

The whites on the Dell are not white AT ALL, more of gray and there is grain on the screen.

Side by side, the HP demolishes the Dell screen on ALL LEVELS.... I cannot even begin to express myself.

If you are in San Diego area, come see it for yourself, your eyes will not believe what you are seeing.

I thought going with vostro 1400 and playing it safe with XGA screen. Boy was I wrong :(.

same as my AU panel on the 1400 with WXGA+, I am getting a replacement shipped to me right now, rolling the dice again :/

The funny thing was, the second i got someone on the phone they knew exactly what i was talking about, almost no need for explanation and troubleshooting, so you know it's not an isolated case :(. The rep on the phone was very helpful but there is a QA issue here for sure.

Before you guys tell us that it's normal and you get what you paid for, I went to Best Buy today and all their laptops ranging from 599->xxxx.xx are glossy and NONE of them look this way.

The blueish tint + grain = hurts my eyes.
