hey guys i just sold my e1505 to a close friend for 650 $. now im looking to buy a vostro.

    i cant decide between 1400 or 1500.

I would love to have the 1400, except that i would have a spare 2gb of ram left over since the smart package comes with 2gb of ram already. I dont like that it comes with a 6 cell battery, dont know how long those last.

    1400 = 699 (50 bucks extra)

1500 = 650 or 599 (if i got with 6 cell), i dont nkow which one to choose, lol.

    need help.

1400. Looking on the dell forum, the 1400s are shipping faster, where the esds for the 1500s are at least 3 weeks after the order. Besides, if you're not getting the 8600gt, it's kind of a waste of space to go for the 1500.

really? hmmm, see i kinda want a 9 cell batter with the 1400 but that would make me spend 100 extra dollars on it, and then i would have 2gb of laptop 667 ram left over.

If you're not going with the 8600gt, I'd get the 1400, which is smaller, lighter, shipping faster, and also has both RAM slots directly accessible on the underside of the computer, which means no taking it in to a tech to remove the keyboard if you'd later like to upgrade to 4gb memory. Besides, if battery life is important, that must mean you plan to carry the laptop around; the the 1500 is very large and heavy, even by 15.4" standards. I only ordered mine because I'll use it as a DTR and I want the 8600gt.

is there a possibility a dell rep would be willing to lower the price for me? what have you guys done to have them bargain with you?

im thinking i might bite the bullet and buy the 1400, i just gotta decide now if the 9 cell is important or not.

    The 1400?

I looked around for various coupon codes and the EPP thing (for australia) and none of them had the Vostro listed and the codes failed on checkout.

I went to talk to some Dell guys at their kiosk in a nearby shopping mall and asked for a better deal. They said they flat out can't give a discount on the Vostro (yes they tried!) but they could on the Inspiron 1420 .. except .. even after the discount the Vostro would still turn out cheaper.

This shouldn't stop you from trying, though.

I have been thinking about it for two months. I almost pulled the trigger on a 6400 in May when they said new Inspirons were coming.

I don't carry it around outside but I often surf or work from the sofa or look at a movie in bed and therefore value the fairly small size. I don't think the 1500 is too fun to carry around if that's your intention.

If I could do it again, I'd get the 1400 just because of the faster shipping. The 1500's are scheduled to ship 3-4 weeks after you order and this isn't even a certainty... it may be delayed further.

Just resell the ram. Heck, I'll buy it. It'll help you cover the cost of battery too.

If you don't need an 8600gt then i'd get a 1400. I just think a 14" is the perfect size for a notebook.

I agree, the size is perfect.

I wanted the 8600GT but I don't really game at all so it took a few days to convince myself. I do think the 8400 will work ok with low/med settings on quite a lot of games.

I've even played games with my IBM T60 that has an ATI Mobility raden X1300. My expectations are low so I am sure I will be happy with it. The only thing that bothers me now is the screen. Some think it's 'grainy' and some not. My T60 screen is perfect so we'll see.
