its so ugly. it probably started with the adamo, then many started following suit. the most recent is the e6220. just ugly? I understand when the thing sticks at the back cause of an optional use of an extended battery but the dell ones you cant get rid of

Its simply cosmetics. Its the current Industrial Design with Dell. I happen to like it as well. BTW...the E6220 looks sharp!

The biggest reason (at least on the mainstream models..ie non Adamo) is to make room for an extended life battery that doesn't extend out of the notebook.

Another more minor reason is to supposedly make it somewhat easier to open on a tray table on a flight...i remember hearing this somewhere but i honestly cannot figure it out.

Third is obviously aesthetics. The Adamo started it out of necessity (the machine itself was literally thinner than the physical ports it needed) and by extending this to other models, it establishes a bit of a family look.

Placing the hinge forward means the screen can tilt further back given the same footprint on the tray.

Moving the hinge also lets them continue to use cheaper 16:9 screen while keep a larger chassis to place components into, rather than using a larger and more expensive 16:10 screen that would be sized to match the chassis. This last point is just speculation though.

I must agree i dont like it i received my XPS 15 on monday and i guess im just going to have to get used to it but the screen doesn't tilt back as far as i'd like die to this "new" design.

Kinda got used to it. Only looks ugly, or rather "out of place" when you have it closed, and you probably aren't using it when the lid is closed, and you probably won't be staring at it when you're not using it. But yeah when other people see it you won't get any "wow" for the look, that's about it.

And why? The same hinge should still work if they placed it back, some tweaking and/or sacrifice might be needed, but they probably just liked the hinge forward design better.

Just curious, when do you need the screen tilted back more than the current max?

I have a try that tilts a laptop to help air flow and give a nicer keyboard angle (bought it for my last laptop) and when its on the try i just cant quite get it far enough back for the sweet spot for veiwing. This is withouth the battery in, with the 9 cell battery it is obviously worse.
