    Windows 7 UK pricing revealed

So long Vista, all is forgiven... now

Microsoft has announced the prices for Windows 7 in the UK. The new OS is currently being put through the beta paces and the final release is due on October 22nd – the "fastest global launch of a Windows Operating System ever,” according to John Curran, Microsoft's Windows Business Lead in the UK.

So how much will it set you back? Well if you start from nothing but a barebones machine and no previous version of Windows to upgrade, it’s £229.99 for the Ultimate edition. Business users can get the Professional edition for £219.99. Home Premium will cost £149.99 – that’s a full 12% discount on the Windows Vista equivalent as Microsoft is mindful of the economic slowdown on tech spending.

There are more savings to be made though. If you want to simply upgrade from an existing Windows Vista package, it’s £199.99, £189.99 and £79.99 for Ultimate, Professional and Home Premium respectively.

But there’s more: Microsoft is hosting a special preorder discount program. It’s available, while stocks last, to anyone who puts in an order between July 15th and August 14th. The pre-order price of Windows 7 Home Premium is a far more reasonable £49.99 while the Professional is £99.99. Orders are limited to 25 copies per customer.

If you’re just about to buy a Windows PC, you don’t need to delay – a free upgrade program is starting tomorrow, June 26th, that will mean anyone who buys a Windows Vista machine will get their upgrade to Windows 7 for free.

Windows 7 rolls out in 14 languages (including English) on October 22nd.

Man, part with cash now or not to. Buying a new machine for travelling to and from work, so wont need to for that; and not fussed about the Inspiron as that's a work dedicated machine, so the question is do I bother with my Sager.

    Nice find though, + rep

For $50 why not? That's less than a PS3 game.

The thing I don't understand is why it's $50 for 7HP, but also £50 for 7HP. How does that work considering the exchange rate is around 1.5 USD to 1 GBP.

That's true. So you'd end up paying about $75 while the US would pay only $50.
Unfair on microsoft's part. Not too great of a deal that way but I guess some discount is better than none.

Do PS3 games follow the same pricing scheme in England?

A brand new PS3 game typically costs about £50 here; so again about $75.

Don't get me started on computer prices either; that's why I bought my Sager when I was in the US last time round. It always rains, we have yellow teeth, everything is smaller (eg big mac is not so big here), and even though it's smaller it costs more.

    I love living here :)

of course you could get someone in the usa to buy, then forward the key or something....

got mine on preorder from amazon... $50... don't think any student edition upgrade would be any cheaper...

oh yes they do. Take a look at HMV.com, or gamestation, or game or whatever. Sure you can get them with £10 off on there, but if you go into a retail outlet they will more often be at full RRP - which for most new games is £49.99, and some are more than that. When I say new games, I am talking about new releases.

At the moment things are a little different, even the retail stores are having to discount brand new releases. But before the economic crysis they didn't.

Like I said, more recently they have been selling discounted even at release. That is just due to the economic situation. If you went into a retail outlet and bought a new release 1 year ago, it would have been £50. The RRP of most new games is still £50, but they can't charge us that. They had to drop prices though because people are hurting for cash.

We still pay considerably more than in the US for most of our computer related stuff.

So, anybody figured out if you can buy the Windows 7 Professional upgrade to run on top of Vista Home Premium? I've asked the question in a couple of Microsoft forums, but only non-microsoft people answer it. Not going to spend my cash without confirmation from somebody I trust or works for M$.
