After re-installing WIN XP, drivers, utilities etc. I have no connection to the network. Only thing I have is a wireless setup. Tried using the network wizard, followed all instructions, no wired connection.

Could use some advice. My wireless setup will be a later issue for me. Right I want to get ont he internet via the built-in NIC card.

What exact Inspiron model? Odds are you somehow missed the LAN driver.

Have a look in control panel > device manager. Does the device appear in there at all (even if it has a yellow icon next to it)?
