Until I can get my wireless router hooked up why can't I plug the wires from my modem into my new notebook and hook up to the internet?

    Patty (very frustrated)

There should be a modem connector somewhere on the back.

make sure you are plugging it into the right spot. if you are using dial up you will need to plug it into the back of the laptop. if you have cable or dsl you will need to plug it into the ethernet slot on the right side of the laptop. this is based on the 1520 model i don't know which laptop you are using. hope this helps.

Yes you can, plug in the Ethernet cable coming out from the modem in to your LAN port. First plug it and see whether it works; if it doesn't then you might have to create a broadband dial up connection depending on how your modem is configured. (assuming you have a broadband internet connection, not an old fashion dialup)

I have DSL. I plugged the ethernet into one place (it is a larger plug) and a smaller cable in another regular phone plug. Am I suppose to just plug the ethernet? I was trying to copy what is with my desktop. My notebook is a Precision 4300.

I don’t understand what you have done; but you should configure your devices like this:

Is your desktop computer using a dialup modem as a backup connection or something?
Normally all you need for DSL is the Ethernet cable. It plugs into your router or directly into your DSL modem (which hopefully has a built-in firewall if you're plugging directly into it).

Plug in only the ethernet cable.

Thanks everyone. I don't know why I thought I had to hook up that extra cable. I will be glad when I get my router up and going.
