now and re-order a hp 17" thats a killer deal... i can get more than what im getting in the 1520 for hardly any more money... man what should i do... arghhhhh
for those waiting and tired of dell maybe take a good hard look at the hp's
-
I actually almost order hp 2500t and returned my Dell 1420. However, I decide to keep Dell due to several factors:
1. extra USB port (extra 2 USB port if HP have nVidia).
2. reported to have longer battery life (6 cell).
3. Nicer Web Cam.
4. feel sturdier than HP (I have tried dv200t).
5. Cool Ruby Red that I am getting.
6. WXGA+
But here is what I will miss:
1. DVI port on HP.
2. finger print reader.
Also, the service I got from Dell so far are better compare to HP. Dell has replaced me a brand new E1405 after my machine couldn't be fixed after 7 months.
I wish HP have more frequent SALE. I may really get a HP if it offers similar price as Dell at the time of purchase. -
i can get the 9500 vs the 1520 for less than 200 more.. with which the 9500 ADDS the ultra brightview screen, dual hard drives, fingerprint reader, and its a 17 instead of a 15.4 which i kinda regret not getting in the first place...
man i dont know what to do.. maybe ill order it and then compare them together, either way i still have plenty of time to send either one back.. im so torn right now... i also personally like the finish on the hp... and actually if i have my sister order it she is a teacher and i believe maybe can get an extra 7% off through her school, im almost positive thats what she got on her other ones.. ... -
This is exactly when dell enforces the 15% restocking fee and mailing fees.
-
lol not if they think something is wrong with it.. at this point im so dissapointed ill tell them what they need to hear to send it back if i need to to not be charged... no offense man
-
No offence taken and all the power to you if it works. Im the biggest fan of getting whats best for your money.
Hp is also right up there in service and warranties, at least they were when i owned mine. -
any idea how the screens are.. i would have kept my very first vostro if the screen didnt look like crap... i loved it except for the screen it was terrible.. and ive searched all night regarding the screen i have coming and i have found pages and pages and pages upon pages.... i mean it seems literally everyone who has this display has the grain problems... i will not put up with that
-
There has to come a point where you just settle down and be happy
...
There will always be a better deal out there... Especially since prices only go down over the passage of time... -
I'd just get the HP. If a nice display is that important to you. Hp displays are among the best out there.. My dv6500 with wxga glossy LG is fantastic. I think the 17 can be ordered with a wxga + screen. I don't think Hp uses crappy vendors and generally do not see any complaints in the HP forum about grainy screens. I personally think the design/keyboard/size/weight/speakers/touchpad/screen are superior to the dell 1420 I had. The only complaint I have with HP is they really bloat them up with crapware. They also do not send recovery discs.. you have to make your own.. and they also do not send a MS anytime upgrade DVD. However, there is a nice guide on the HP forum to do a clean install and a link to purchase a anytime upgrade DVD from compusa for less then 6 bucks including shipping. I also want to comment on HP's built in altec lansing speakers.. these are worlds better then dells and its something I can actually use.
I think people are putting too much emphasis on Dells nice colors.. Yes they are nice. And the satin finish is non prone to fingerprints etc.. But thats where it ends.. The new inspirons are just too bulky and heavy in this day of age. Other then the colorful lids, the inspirons offer very little in style and design. If you don't believe me just carry/work and use both like I have. It became obvious to me very quickly that HP has put alot of thought into their designs. I too really wanted something more colorful, and still do. But its not worth what you give up in everything else. -
and i've read lots of posts from other people that say their screens are beautiful...
and you must always keep in mind, people dont go online and complain when things are working fine....you will always see more bad posts vs good posts on a forum... -

I broke down and ordered
- HP Pavilion dv2500t notebook
- Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
- Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T7500 (2.20 GHz, 4 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
- 14.1" WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
- 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
- 319MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
- HP Imprint (Radiance) + Fingerprint Reader + Webcam + Microphone
- Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection and Bluetooth(TM)
- FREE Upgrade to 160GB 5400RPM from 120GB 5400RPM!!
- SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
$883 shipped.
Gains over Vostro 1500:
1). Upgrade from 1.6Ghz to 2.2Ghz.
2). 120GB to 160GB HD
3). Webcam
4). Bluetooth
5). Fingerprint reader
6). Most likely a Better screen than what i have gotten from Dell
7). Smaller form factor, I initially wanted the vostro1400 but it was more money to config than my budget (the way i wanted it). So going to a 14.1" is actually a + for me.
8). No known issue of headjack noise
9). extra $20 in my pocket
Losses:
1). 8600M GT, which is ok, after having my laptop for 2 weeks, i realized I'm never going to game on it.
2). 2 year onsite warranty, this one i'm going to miss the most.
After weighing my options and putting them next to my needs, I just could not go wrong with HP.
I'm taking a few courses which require me to view lectures online. Sitting through a 45 minute video of a lecture (lot of pauses, low volume). OMFG, the headphone jack noise was unbearable to the point where I just could not pay attention to the lecture. That was about the turning point for me. Sorry Dell, get your acts together. -
just fyi i just left office depot looking at the hp screens.. after checking nearly 15 or more HP laptops (we have a very large office depot here they even had a 6500 on display) all but 2 of them used............ sec screens... one had a nvd??? never heard of them the other was a auo... so out of over 15 notebooks all brand new (i know the manager they just changed out displays about 2 weeks ago) none had lg's in them... and the ones that had sec's in them were aweful... funny thing was they had a few gateways on display that guess what had sec's in them also but they were both BEAUTIFUL!!!!! id be so happy with one of those... so i dont know what i will do now.. my sec is coming today and im sure i will not like it
-
hit or miss Zfactor.
Co-worker has a AUO WXGA in his vostro and it's beautiful. I'd kill to have his screen. Bright, clear, no grain, MINIMAL backlight bleed, excellent viewing angles. I'm jealous of his AUO screen.
I've seen people with excellent SEC screens and horrid SEC screens.
Really a toss up. -
to be honest, hp is such a killer deal. i really hate my dell and if it isn't because i want to game on it, i would not keep it.
-
how much worse is the 8600gs vs the 8600gt
-
the factor that made me choose dell > hp was the fact of the 8600m gt card.
-
You can overclock the GT, GS? Gluck...
but I mean, depends on how much gaming you will be doing in the future. All the games now will play fine, but like Crysis? GT can probably play on low to mid, i dono what GS can play. -
The 2 weeks i had my laptop with 8600GT, All I did was browse the net and watch X264 encoded movies (the reason I got Nvidia at all over X3100 for my HP).
I installed Half-life and BF2 just to see how they would run and never even played it.
So in my situation, I think i'll be ok with HP and their crappy warranty (owned Hp before).
If not, i'll go cry about it in HP section of this forum, look for me there LOL. -
All I had to do to get this deal was call Dell Returns and say I was going to get an HP because they were on sale and they were better and cheaper than the one I had just bought. After a few minutes of chit-chat with the CSR, I had $150 coming to me, bringing the cost of my system down to $900. It's a bit more expensive than getting a dv6500t would be, but the extra resolution in the screen and the 7200rpm HDD make up the difference.
Inspiron 1520
Jet Black
Core 2 Duo 7100
8400m GS
2gb DDR2
120gb 7200rpm HDD
WXGA+ screen
85 W/hr battery -

i guess man.. to me the screen is the most inportant thing.. if i cant stand looking at it due to it looking horrible i will not use the notebook
-
30% off is a pretty amazing deal. An HP dv9500t with a configuration similar to my Inspiron 1720 comes out to ~$100 less than I paid up front (before getting $140 credited back). I'd still stick with my 1720 w/an 8600GT over the HP w/ a GS, but I'd be hard pressed to buy one at Dell's current prices- my system (w/ a 7500 instead of a 7300 now thanks to Intel's new plan) prices out to over $300 more than I paid, so $400 more than the HP. Pretty hard to justify $400 for a difference of one letter...
-
yeah i know thats why im kicking myself now for just not getting the 1720 to begin with
-
I got an LG screen and it looks amazing. -
wow 30% of hp over 999$ i may return the dell
