lol depends, some will swear to god Vista is the Son of satan, and others will say its fine. Xp is tried and tested and in all senses relatively sound, Vista new you may like it you may hate it its a gamble.

You can ask for Viste home premium and they should change it they did for me.

well i like vista... i have had no real problems at all... and apparently theres new vista updates which fix the previous "errors/Bugs" that vista "has"... but i didnt notice no difference after teh updates because i had no problems in the first place :)

Also your laptop should run vista just fine aswell!

I don't have enough time to type in a detailed answer right now, but it's a definite Vista for me.

Give it a try, learn about it, and it will not disappoint.

Well, Vista's pretty shaky now (although less than XP when it came out), but hopefully with SP1 in Q1 2008 and some further development on the things like video drivers, it'll at the very least perform an par with XP and have the added benefit of a shinier shell and new features (which I think are improvements).

The only real "minus" is getting 2 gigs of RAM versus 1 with XP.

Thankfully DDR2 RAM has dropped in price :D

I've read that if you get Vista Business you're also getting an XP Pro License - in the event that you don't like Vista you can legally switch back to XP Pro until you're ready to switch to Vista.

Had Vista for 3 weeks on my Vostro and last night I finally had enough and loaded up XP. Vista is really pretty and it's a decent OS for my desktop but I need a top performing, quick & nimble OS on my laptop. So far I've squeezed 18 more minutes of battery life on XP vs. Vista. With Vista my hard drive didn't stop spinning for 3 weeks - that's a bit ridiculous. And the games seem to run more smoothly and boot up just a bit quicker on XP. Just my experiences so far.

Seems so, as Commander Wolf said you could legally go back to XP Pro if you dont like vista. But it seems some people have problems with vista and others dont.

Why would you want a system that requires 2 GB of ram to run? That's as much overhead as the worst of bloatware. I'm really curious why MS went that route, I would use XP. Hands down, no questions asked, unless I had the option of Ubuntu with wireless drivers hehe. Vista is going to require more of your processing power than XP, and XP already has driver support and all the bugs squashed out. I haven't used Vista yet, but until 4 GB of SODIMM RAM comes down in price, I think I'll be sticking with XP on my notebook.

Outside of ram, I find that Vista's performance improves exponentially with a 7200rpm hard drive over a 5400.

With my 2.0ghz dual core, it's really quite ok.

As for the extra ram.. well, I really didn't cry about the 40 bucks it cost to push my machine from 1 to 2, and it runs very smooth.

I would say go with vista as well.

I am running it on a D830 t7500 with 2gb and had a lot of problems at first but I updated all my drivers, flashed the bios to A04 and did some tweaking and it seems to purrrr along. There are a few hiccups here and there but nothing major.

Some windows seem to open slower than xp but I think it is the animation that makes it look slower even though it is really the same speed.

I used tweakVI for the most part but there is supposed to be a great vista tweak guide http://vistaforums.com/Forum/Topic562-12-1.aspx but I have not tried it yet but I was emailed it by 3 separate friends so I assume it is worth a look.

Processing power is not that much and Vista uses RAM FAR more efficiently, and yes a tad more.

2 GB of RAM is now what a total of 80 bucks (2x1 GB). I remember buying 512 MB of RAM for 50 bucks (And not at the fastest speed!)

    ^ I remember buying 4MB of RAM for $100.

But that was 13 years ago. Sorry to interrupt.

One can argue that with the relative speed of computers today, why wouldn't you want to leverage that computing power?

Vista has increased overhead, but with that overhead come benefits, too. In the age of dual cores, 800FSB's for notebooks, affordable 2GB+ RAM, 7200rpm SATA hard drives, etc. - you can afford it.

XP is ok, and certainly more than enough of an OS to suite 99.9% of your needs. We have 5 Windows machines and only one running Vista. I have it on this notebook, but I haven't found the need to upgrade the other machines. On that same note, I won't resist change for the sake of resisting it, either.

And seriously, giving opinion and advice based on what you've just read about and have no personal experience with is just propagating rumor. Give it a try and then give us your opinion.

    Regards,
    Paolo

I have used Vista on my old 3.0 gHz Pentium 4 with 1 GB of RAM and it did run. It was much less snappy than XP, but it did run.

On a modern machine, I have compared both operating systems. Given 2 GB of RAM, Vista will run OK, but not, in my opinion, the way a new machine should run - snappy. With 4 GB of RAM, XP is beyond fast, while Vista is merely fast. With 1 GB, XP runs plenty well, while Vista will only run decently with Aero turned off.

Bottom line, if speed is the number one factor and you are only getting 2 GB or less, get XP. If you get 4 GB, get Vista as it is newer, prettier and more secure than XP, and will do well with 4 GB RAM.

4 gigs? Might expensive, I suppose if you have the money.

2 gigs with Vista = good.
1 gig with XP = Great.
