I'm either going to get a 1530 or a g1s. I can get it anytime in the next six months, but am going to college this fall so will need it then. I'm assuming that the 1530 will have penryn and led updates by then, but what are the chances of dell coming out with a montevina refresh by then.
Also, i read that the led screen is expected to be of the 1440x900 resolution. Are there any advantages that the 1650x1050 screen would have over this.
Thanks

Both have the same video cards, generally same HD (200gb on asus), both have same screen. BUT, the 1530 doesn't look like a child's laptop. I saw the g1s at the local BB and I can't pull that thing out at the office. It has the same power as the 1530 but the 1530 looks so much sharper.
I mean the G1s has green lights on the side!!! lol
PLUS. the g1s you can get for 1499 new. I got the 1530 for 1250 after taxes WITH a blu ray writer. You can't beat that price anywhere. Got it from dell outlet when they had coupons. they come out with copons all the time.
Sit tight and wait for a coupon to come along. Some people have issues with outlet laptops but that is 1/10. I myself just got my 1530 last week and already the screen has been replaced to the sweet LG screen bcuz I had samsung b4. And, I honestly, did not have 1 scratch on the machine or anything. The machine looked brand new purchasing it from the outlet. There have been ppl getting the xps for 800 minus BR. -
In Australia, the G1s gets owned by the M1530.

the thing i dont like about the G1S is that the display panel is almost the size of a 4:3 aspect ratio screen. Its huge! look at the large black area above and below the screen, its nearly twice as large as the m1530 (the area above the screen, not the entire thing)
To me, it seems that the base just looks too wide from front to back. when I look at it I get the impression that they took an older laptop case with a 4:3 aspect ratio monitor and just dropped a 16:9 screen in it.
I dislike like how the screen hinge is asymmetrical.
The G1S that was reviewed by NBR seems to have a lower 3dMark 06 score than the m1530. my m1530 gets about 500 more points at default clocks. However, this could be due to the lack of drivers at the time and the fact that it was being run on vista.
battery life is worse in the G1S as well as the ability to drop in a 9-cell battery that lifts up the laptop to allow more airflow. as well as the keyboard layout. I really like the layout of the pg up,down, home, end and delete keys on the m1530.
lastly, i hear people complain mostly about the speakers and I enjoy listening to music without having to use earphones. -
Though i dont own a G1S, i do have an A6KM, which by the look of it, is the same base chassis, as the G1S.
The M1530 does feel slightly lighter built, its prone to "creaking" more, but still feels solid.
The speakers (if the same) are better in the M1530.
I prefer the Keyboard on the M1530, which oddly feels better than the A6KM's which is also rather good, but it had the Fn key on the far left which drove me mad (looks like they changed that).
The screens are very similar, but the M1530's seems a little better in view angles and backlight bleed.
Internals i dont know, but i do like the slot loading DVD in the M1530. -
That G1S does look a lot like the A6 chassis which has been around for years and years.
I've just moved from an A6Ja to the M1530 and I've found the M1530 chassis to be slimmer, shallower (i.e. shorter front to back), lighter and more rigid. I've had no issues lifting the M1530 by one corner whereas the A6Ja would flex and creak!
Also, the palm rest area on my A6Ja is significiently worn after 2 years of use. I'm expecting the brushed metal finish of the M1530 to last better.
So yeah, I reckon the M1530 has a much better case. Better looking, better wearing, lighter, smaller and better built.
Oh, and Asus can be quite anal about the warranty and upgrading things like the HDD and Ram. Dell seem much more relaxed -
I had the G1s for a few months before I sold it on eBay so I could buy the m1530. The m1530 is such a better laptop, I don't miss the Asus ONE bit. The m1530 has a MUCH (read: 2X at LEAST) better battery (with the 9 cell), the exact same graphics card, processor (typically) resolution, hard drive, etc.
I could barely hear the speakers on my G1s which is not the case with the m1530 - they're definitely louder. The G1s was HUGE and looked like an Alienware but ...not quite. The m1530 looks so much sleeker and more professional, and that, coupled with the better battery and the SAME performance, make it a pretty easy issue (at least for me).
I could not take my G1s to three classes to take notes because it would die halfway through the second - not that I would want to take it out with those damn neon green accents on the sides. Go with the m1530.
