My current order includes the 1680x1050 screen which dell has discontinued...
I've considered changing my order, but I'd kinda just like to stick with what I've got (it's less expensive and all...)...

Anyway, here's my question(s) to those of you who got this screen:

    1) What manufacturer do you have (samsung, LG, etc...)?

    2) Is it grainy? Is this grainyness a 'deal breaker'?

    3) Any other complaints about this screen?

    4) Yay or nay in terms of quality?

If I wouldn't have wanted a LED screen and read about all the bad screesn, i'd say my 1680x1050 Samsung is almost perfect and never would have sent it back. Besides the white haze at the bottom of the screen when viewing black things, its nice.

And its rare to notice it. When Windows boots and the screen is lit black, I notice it on the bottom. Once and a while on a black website or something, its noticable. My wife said I was stupid for exchanging it because of this.

There was no grain to the screen, and everything was sharp and clear.

Did you end up with a samsung?

And I just emailed the sales guy telling him not to bother calling...If the screen is bad I will make it an issue then but I'm really just so tired of dealing with dell I'll just wait for what I originally ordered... Who knows...maybe it will ship before the 10th...

Yes, mine is the Samsung that everyone had problems with. I have seen a few posts in the last couple days from people who just got a Samsung 1680x1050, and they said they got good ones.

Maybe you will get a good one. If not, call Customer Care, explain why it is not acceptable, tell them you did research and found that it is a common problem, and that you are worried that you will keep getting junk screens. Say that you like the laptop, and because you bought a premium product, you expect premium components. Then, tell them you have read the LED 1440x900 is a great screen, and because you waited so long for your system, you'd appreciate it if they sent your rebuild with the LED screen.

I didn't have to fight. He put me on hold, checked on something or whatever, confirmed my info, and it is on its way. Took like 10 minutes or so.

    I think that's what I'll do if I don't like the 1680...

    1 - Samsung

2 - Nope. I never actually noticed how grainy the screen was on my M140 until I got the M1530. My Samsung isn't grainy at all.

3 - I have absolutely no complaints about mine.

4 - Mine's a Yay, but then I'm a party of one. YMMV. I really like the 1680x1050 resolution. After I ordered it I started thinking that it'd be too small on a 15.4 and that I should have gotten 1440x900. But after seeing it I know I'd made the right choice on the resolution. I'm sure the LED is brighter (though mine is plenty bright enough for me) but since there's no LED for WSXGA+ it doesn't matter.

If I were you I'd stick it out and see how you like it. Seems as if a couple of other guys recently got swapped to the 1440 after complaining about their screens, so it shouldn't be a problem for you of you don't like yours. I'm not giving mine up though.

Its not on all Samsungs, but it is a problem on some, probably the minority. It may seem like a lot of people complain, but people who have problems always complain, and people with good systems don't talk about it as much.

Another option is to call them and ask specifically for the LG screen if you get a grainy Samsung. They can have a tech come and replace it.

Most the time they cannot give you a specific screen. It depends on the parts in stock.
