is this a problem with the xps m140/700/710m notebooks?...
-
Not really with the 700m, maybe with the fastest possible processor you'll get more heat. Nobody has the XPS M140 yet and the 710m is not even announced, it'll be some time before you get feedback there.

someone soon should have it for review hopefully.. some people manage to get in on the dell deal yesterday making it around 1000 after taxes and shipping cost for decent specs.

It runs very cool and quiet. I had a beta unit a little while ago for eval, and CHC says CPU is at 40C. My Fujitsu 3510 with the same 2.0GHz OM runs at 54C, no load. So I think the X140/630M has good cooling, and was virtually silent....

The XPS M140 should run smoothly. I was able to play around with a 700m and didn't have any heat issues at all, it was even equiped with a 2GHz Pentium M. I used it on my lap for about 2 hours before I had to move (as it was time for work). The Pentium M and Intel GMA 900 gpu really make the smaller line of Dells run cool.
PS - I still don't know why they are calling a notebook with a integrated gpu a XPS. That would be like putting a Ferari label on my 1998 For Escort.
There, I got it over with. That is my small rant. -
thanks for the reply guys...on more thing..dell's site says that the m140 runs longer than 6hrs...is that with the std battery or with the additional battery?....
-
I would say that would probably have to be the 9 cell. From personal experience with similar models you'll probably see around 3-4 hours with the 6 cell and 4-5 hours with the 9 cell. That's with the screen dimmed and the machine power saving turned on.
-
Yeah thats pretty long and like duffy said, it must be a nine cell. The Centrino helps a lot, but if you use wireless and game on it, it will need to work more thus meaning less battery life. As far as im concerned with the fans/heat, they will all run pretty cool since there based on Centrino and there realitivly small.

The XPS 140 only comes with an integrated graphics solution, take a good look at its chassis, if it is identical to the inspiron 6000 which is most likely the case, it shouldnt have any heat related problems at all provided you run the fans at default or better speed and dont turn them down.
As for gaming, look elsewhere as this laptop is not designed for it, for business and school work, it should be just fine though.
xps m140..any heat/fan issues?
