I have a question about the xps1730, is it two 512mb cards in sli or two 256 mb's?...
Also is it true sli or a gx2 setup?.
I'm confused coz dell customer support denies any knowledge of 512mb 8700 in sli.
    Any replies appreciated.

    I'm pretty sure it's 2 x 256 in SLI.

Correct it's 2x256MB 8700M GTs in SLI configuration.

If you do the math, 256 x 2 is 512
So graphic-wise the machine is pretty decent
Able to play newest games in high-mid settings

If you do the math I have 1GB of VRAM but that's not how it works. Each GPU has to work off their own set of VRAM to actually get anything done, it can't "borrow" the other GPU's VRAM because the lag would be too huge. ergo the XPS 1730 has 256mb of VRAM

So does this mean that the SLI works like a C2D and they "share" the works?

From what i've been able to gather in my 2 months of searching is that, conventional sli splits the screen into two parts and the dual cards each have half the screen to render. This helps the 8700 because it has good performance at lower resolutions. But as i understand, due to it's 128bit bus limitation, any vram on it beyond 256mb each is not noticeable.

But in case of the xpsm1730, it has a gx2 type card, meaning two gpu's on one board, so that may work differently.
    Any corrections are welcome.
