Hello!
I'm going to build a gaming desktop, I've got the parts picked out pretty much, however I was wondering if reusing my power supply from my 2011 pc would be safe. It's 850w, and has a 5 year warranty that is of course ended now. It's a Thermaltake TR2 80+ bronze.

It should work just fine. The only consideration I would have is the power requirements of the new build. Power draw has come down significantly lately and you may end up wasting a lot of power to heat with such a powerful power supply and modern lower power draw components. This of course depends on your build and what parts you are using.

These are two I'm considering currently.

I think you'll be fine with your current PSU. You can get away with less power but that model is pretty efficient even at low loads (at least 82% efficient as low as 20% load (170W)), so I think you will be fine. Plus you'll have some headroom if you want to add another GPU for SLI, and also plenty of power for overclocking.
Check this useful tool if you want to calculate how much power consumption you can expect:

I also recommend one of those kill-a-watt power meters so you can monitor power consumption.Last edited: Jun 8, 2017BarnacleBill likes this. -
