I'm building a low power fanless pc myself. I went with the new Apollo Lake J3455 Celerons which is impressive given its 10W TDP. The board I ordered is the ASRock J3455B-ITX. From benchmarks I've been seeing, it's about on par in terms of processor performance to a 1st gen i5-430M which is 35W TDP. If anyone is interested, I'll post some results once I put it together.

I wanted something small and low power, the Atom x5 Z8300 has an TDP of 2W the entire PC idles at around 5W

My main use is as an media player, I have tried a few android tv boxes and they cannot play 1080p 10-bit H.265 or H.254 10-bit in hardware decoding and even the latest ARM SOC octo core is software playback only and they just do not have enough power to play a smooth video.

The Z8300 has enough power to play 10-bit smooth in software.

A PC that consumes less than most light bulbs :D Amazing how efficient CPUs are getting as time goes by.

I was looking for an smallish monitor that did not use much power, I found a second-hand AOC 19.5" LED for £24 and it uses less than 10W while some monitor can use 40W or more, So check before you buy, unless you don't pay the electric bill.

That's my next step. I still have an old 2007 Acer 22" that consumes around 30W with the brightness way down, around 48W with the brightness maxed.

It's named DroidBox, but not running Android lol

I was thinking of buying a similar thing, but at last decided to build a fanless AMD AM1 mini-ITX system instead.

Sure, why not? I have an AM1 system (and I was thinking of soldered system like J1900 or A4-5000 before that) so that'll make a good comparison.

    Detailed spec:
    • MSI AM1I mini-ITX motherboard
    • AMD Athlon 5150 APU (Radeon R3 integrated graphics, GCN architecture)
    • Stock AMD aluminum heatsink (fan removed)
    • 2 x 4GB Kingston DDR3-1333 low-profile RAM
    • 2.5" 500GB Western Digital SATA HDD
    • Intel 6230 WiFi + BT combo card
    • Advance Slimtour 3908B mini-ITX case (2 x 50mm fans removed)
    • Delta 60W (12V 5A) power brick
    • Windows 10 Home 64-bit
Now sitting in living room and plugged to a 53" TV (no way it's gonna drain as little as 10W :D) as an HTPC.
