Have an associate who owns a fairly small form factor PC with an i7 6700 (non-K) CPU. He wants to add a GPU to it, but the system has a proprietary 350W power supply that can't be upgraded. What's the most powerful graphics card that can run in this machine given the CPU that's already present?

Will also depend on if the PSU has a PCIe power connector or not. Any idea if it has that?

I know it has at least one 6+2 pin connector, so let's work under that assumption.

Then i would say something on the line of a borderline stock / small GTX 1070. Or the GTX 1060 easily.

The 1070 might push it a little bit. Depending on how many other components are present in the system. But since the 6700k is max 95W and considering that the PSU is 80% efficient under max load, the 1070 will be a touch and go scenario under heavy load. (again this is considering the CPU is running at full 95W)

if what was there could be trusted to handle what the standards demand then 225w card or lower should be ok
but if you look at this breakdown:
PCIE x16 slot is designed for 75w(with safety margins)
    +
pcie 8pin/6+2 connector is designed for an additional 150w(with safety margins)
    +
6700 non k only uses about 65w but there will only be about 10w left over for everything else

TLDR don't go too high above a 150w card

Edit sorry I was thinking about a 300w psu if it is 350 then you would have 60w left over for mobo and stuff

The CPU is the 6700 non-K, so it's 65W max.

Ah yeah! Totally botched that. A smaller version with the similar TDP as that of the FE 1070 should be ok.

But again, all this is considering that the PSU is at least 80% efficient under full load.

I never advise anyone to get anything under 750Watt having more then enough power to keep the PS cool itself when you push the system is better then a overworked PS. But in the case of a proprietary 350W have you checked to see if there are PS that matches it that can do more then the current 350? Also it would help if you can tell the rest what system it is so others can give more info to help them upgrade if needed.
