    Hopefully the Area-51 R2 motherboard gets a BIOS update. That 6950X will bring my desktops CPU performance to that of my old Panther 5 (P570WM) :D

    Haswell-EP is locked. Maybe if one was lucky to find an ES chip that is unlocked but retail chips are locked down.

    I had the Xeon 2680 v2 Ivy-EP CPU in my Eurocom Panther 5. It was not able to overclock one bit because of course it was locked. But 10 cores with full turbo 24/7 performed much better in rendering than a overclocked 6-core @ 4.5Ghz.

    Some E5 V3 1600 chips are unlocked.

    Either way none of the E5 16XX v3 chips have more than eight cores. I would rather get a 5960X at that point.

    All Xeon's are locked except for a few ES chips. It's been that way since like X58.

    That's not true, some of the 1P E5 Xeons with 8 cores or less are most definitely unlocked.
