I bought my parents a Emachine years ago that had a celeron 440 in it, for them that was great. but about 3 weeks ago the hard drive died! LOL. I was very lucky and able too save all the photos. and now loaded with a new drive! upgraded too 500GB and even too windows 10 now. but what I would like too do is upgrade the Proc. from the celeron 440 2ghz too a duel core. if possible! the proc. is in a 775LGA socket. but beyond that. I AM LOST! at where too look and etc. Could some one help.

killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Look for Intel Core 2 Duo or Quad series, Pentium 4s are not worth it. Obviously make sure the CPU is made for LGA775 socket, so that you wouldn't buy a mobile C2D/Q by mistake. -
For the LGA775 socket I would look for Intel Core 2 Quads which can now be yours for no more than $20 on sites like eBay. But given you have an old eMachines system I would check two things:
1. Whether the stock PSU (power supply) can handle the power.
2. Whether your motherboard supports the processor at all.
Since we haven't got a model number I'm going to assume its a eMachines W3650 which uses a ECS 945G-M3 motherboard and the CPU support list is very limited (see here). The best chip here would be the Core 2 Duo E6420 which on eBay is about $8 if you want to keep the current setup.
It really depends what you're going to use it for at the end of the day, for general office work and internet browsing it should be fine. If you plan to do anything taxing like HD encoding or gaming (even MMO/MOBA) then you probably want to consider overhauling it to something a bit more newer but the ball is in your court.TomJGX likes this. -
i remember back when everyone went looking for the q6600. beast of a chip overclocks so well

Worth a try if there's a cpu around to test with. -
