Man that's cheap. My 4690K was €250ish, and $300 for a 5820K is a freakin' steal!

Man that sucks your i5 isn't working. Do you think you got some CLU got on something and shorted it? Or maybe bent pins in the socket, do they all look OK? I've run my 3770K without a lid for years and never had a problem... Sorry I suggested the delid.
Like @octiceps said please don't try to delid the new CPU.
-
Man, wish the Micro Center near my house hadn't shut its doors
-
No way lol, not delidding my 5820. No CLU or anything, I didn't use CLU on it yet, just some GC Extreme. Everything looks fine. Just weird that benchmarks like wPrime and Cinebench were about 10-15% slower than before the delid. CPU was at 100% and 3.6GHz like before though. RAM was still 1600MHz too. I couldn't figure it out. Nothing else should have been slowing it down.
But I got my mobo and CPU and RAM and should be good to go if I can keep my kids occupied and out of my hair for a couple hours this weekend. -

The 5820k actually is a great chip. Run mine happily at 4.4Ghz all day long.HTWingNut likes this. -
No real need to delid the 5820k.. The y atleast put proper TIM or solder I heard in between.
-

Yes, do not ever ever try to delid the 5820K. They use an epoxy solder and if you manage to somehow take the lid off you kill the CPU.
-
Dam... Yeah that's what you don't want. Nice picture.. Very gruesome

Was up late last night putting it all together. So far so good! Happy as a clam so far. Just wish the top drive cage could be removed in the Corsiar 450D. Also now I want a 2TB SSD to complete my setup. Ugh another $700. But won't do that for a while. Have a 256GB Samsung M.2 for my boot, 256GB Samsung 830 as my scratch/temp storage drive and 960GB Sandisk Extreme Pro for my main driver. I just don't want a 3.5" HDD in there. Now I just have to organize the wires a little better and button it up. That i7-5820k does run cool with the Corsair H110i GT cooler. I'm using the stock paste that came on the pump, but will repaste with CLU then I will start to OC.

I opted not to go with CLU because I think a traditional paste will do fine and will also be easier to clean... NT-H1
-
Loool. The i7-5820k barely breaks a sweat. 42C after 30 mins of BF4. The GPU however runs about 73-75C which is warmer than I expected but then again, it is twice as fast as my 980m! lol.

If you're using Precision X you can setup a custom fan table for the GPU. Do you know what fan speed the card is running at in game? Usually the stock tables are good if you like quiet. -
I won't get too concerned until it gets in the mid 80's. I'm also going to place a fan at the bottom of the case which will blow air right up at the GPU.
-
OC that 5820K and watch the temps skyrocket.
-
Running at 4GHz 1.14V and 58C with Prime95. That's with the AIO H110i in quiet mode.
4GHz is all I care about at the moment. If I can get it running cool and quiet at 4GHz then I'll be happy. May bump to 4.2GHz and see if it's any hotter/louder. -
I can do 4.4 @ 1.2v. Currently have mine at 4.2ghz with 1.17v. It may go lower on voltage but haven't tried it yet. Been running this config for about a week no with zero issues. With my H55 AIO I top out around 50C or so with 4.2ghz in BF4 after a couple hours of gameplay.
HTWingNut likes this. -
Are you running quiet or high performance profile on the H55? And what Thermal Paste? 50C seems low unless you're capping FPS?
Note: Going on 4hrs P95 now with 4GHz 1.14V so far so good!
EDIT: Hmm, just ran a long game of BF4 and it was average 42C with peak 50C
But CPU utilization was 25-35% which tells me it's only using two cores or it's well threaded but only using a small portion of each core. 980 Ti at 76C, game was running 2560x1440 Ultra at 120FPS cap.

Geez with that much thermal and voltage headroom you really ought to push that sucker. These chips are built like tanks and can take enormous amounts of punishment. To give you an idea, the first 4930K I ran 4.5GHz @ 1.4V for almost an entire year without incident. But I damaged the IMC the first day I got the chip by sending too many volts through it, so recently got it replaced through Intel's PTPP (overclocking warranty) and this new chips does 4.5GHz @ 1.36V and can finally run my ram 2133MHz @ 9-11-11-24 with just a slight nudge in IMC voltage.
-
Looks like you got a good chip as well then. I am using a Noctua SP fan on my H55 with PK-3 thermal paste and I think I have the fan profiles setup differently from stock. Its not super loud, but far from silent as well. I think the highest they go is around 50% if I get over 50C.
I game at 1080p Ultra settings with NO CAPs on FPS. Lol I want as many as possible for my 144hz screen.
My Case is also extremely well ventilated with many case fans. -
I also purchased that warranty when I bought my chip. I figured I was going to be overclocking and decided it was cheap insurance.
BTW I've had my eye on your monitor for some time. How do you like it? I've read its like hitting the lottery to get a perfect monitor though. There is just no way I'm willing to risk getting anything less than perfection @ $800. -
I kind of wish I had gone with that Acer as well. I like my Asus, but nothing beats IPS. There's a clear difference between TN even with wide viewing angles, and IPS. But yeah with IPS it can be a lottery.
I remember with my Dell LCD years back it took like five exchanges to get one that didn't have issues. They never blinked though every time I called to get it exchanged, and they paid all the round trip shipping. Twice horrific backlight bleed, once a clump of bad pixels, once a bruise (and bad backlight bleed), once a broken button and cracked bezel... sigh. Final one was close to perfect though. Not sure Amazon or Newegg would go through that hassle though, that LCD was direct from Dell when I bought it.
This time at least this Asus, as far as I can tell, is pixel perfect. $200 cheaper too... -
This Asus VG248QE I have is perfect. Zero issues, zero dead pixels, no blacklight bleeding, and was the first one I got from Amazon. I do have a Microcenter and Frys nearby, so maybe if they stock the Acer monitor and prices drop eventually I will look into upgrading to 144hz, IPS. I just can't go back to anything less than 144hz now. My eyes are forever spoiled.

I kind of wish I didn't go to 144hz, I can't go back now. I'm not the slightest bit interested in 4k until we get 120hz.
-
Well the monitor definitely doesn't feel like an $800 monitor. Build quality really is subpar, and the entire thing reeks of cheap plastic. I got lucky with no dead pixels, but I have inverse backlight bleeding (lower left corner is darker than rest of screen). Also the buttons for controlling the OSD died on me after about 3 months so now I can't even control contrast or brightness without a software solution. So there definitely is a huge issue with QC, so much so that Amazon actually pulled it from stock for a while due to too many complaints.
The ugly aside, 1440p IPS @ 144Hz is definitely a great experience, and as long as you get lucky with the panel lottery, you'll have a wonderful time. Now I don't know if Acer fixed the QC issues for the initial batch or not, but if I were you, I would not buy from anywhere besides Amazon in case anything goes wrong. -
Here we go. Finally pretty much everything I need for the moment. Now to dress up the wall (and cover that hole that was a mistake by me) a bit with some decoration and organize my cables.

Nice but isn't that monitor a little too far away?

It's on a swing arm. But the desk is 24 inches deep and it sits just forward of the front edge of the desk, so I don't need to move it too far closer.

Nice clean set up there. I like it

@HTWingNut
It's listed in the for sale section under everything else with the details. Thanks bro! -
Removing the case cover made zero difference in temperature. Running a fan over the card with cover on or off resulted in 2C drop is all. I think this case is well optimized for airflow as it is. Just too bad I couldn't get lower than 72C at load.
-
72C at load for a 980 Ti is not bad at all.
-
After some further gameplay it's running about 76C. I even put on CLU. I might remove it and go back to a traditional paste. Dosen't seem to improve temps and just will possibly be a headache to remove later.
Edit: I guess it's not too bad. I'm seeing other users reporting 80-83C at ~ 1200MHz, mine is running 1328MHz consistent with fans at 1600RPM and 75-76C.Last edited: Sep 26, 2015 -
Those temps seem decent. My 980ti was pushing into 80's regularly before I added a Hybrid cooler onto it.
-
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Your temps are good.
My stock 970 gets 71C under load. -
Don't use the temp numbers from review sites, most of them run their setup on an open bench so their temps are at least 10C lower than what you'd expect.
If you have a reference 980 Ti you can install an AIO for much better temps, if that's to your liking. -
I have an MSI 980 Ti and have a Corsair AIO (H110i GT) with CLU. And it is actually running 4-7C cooler than review sites.
-
HTWingNut I went with the Strix 980 Ti because I read about those higher temps on the MSI and EVGA versions. I also have a black and red theme so this matched my setup perfectly. Leaving my card at stock it boosts out of the box to 1404Mhz and on stock fans it goes up to 47% and tops out around 72-73C. I suppose I could mess around with the fan profiles but I figure for this card these temps are great at these clock speeds.

Try putting fan speeds above 50% and the GPU will sound like an airplane on take off

Considering a new desktop & G-Sync LCD... Suggestions?
