Desktop for travel.

Hi guys. Well, yeah, it sounds funny, but still. I think about some kind of desktop that I can take with me when I travel or move to different apartment, but is not that often, maybe once a year. Anyway, I though to buy a foldable bench case so I can remove everything and fold in a bag. Honestly I have no idea how it will be, but I want 9900K or better, 2080 Ti, few m.2 SSDs on mobo and so on. First of all, I'd like to know how much weights such configuration? What do you think about this mad plan?

 

Look into getting a kolink rocket case or dan a4 sfx case. Theyre the size of a shoe box but you a to go mini itx. You have the streacom BC1 benchtable but the problem with that is you have to remove all the parts every time you move. The cases I mentioned it all stays in one convenient package.

People have succesfully done build s with a 9900k and 2080 Ti. I will soon be doing one. I already have the 2080 Ti and 8086k just waiting for mini itx to come back from rma and need to order the kolink rocket case which is a bit better value

@Zill is on to something. If you don't mind moving any KB, mice, monitors, external devices, or have multiples of them and you can set them up so all you need to do is just move a 'box' from location to location, the mini-ITX is not a bad option, as it will give you a bit more protection from dust and accidentally banging something during a move.

AsRocks and others mobo manufacturers will have a solution for your components, but you'll have to make sure the case has room for the GPU.

Thanks for replies. I thought about SFF case too, but its pretty limited as for desktop. mITX mobo has only 2 RAM slots or 4 laptop's sized, also few options for power brick, etc. I know that I have to remove all the part with bench case, that's actually my point - to remove and fold all the part in abbag to save more space, it is not the best option, but at least I can have EATX mobo and build desktop with no limits at all, so I can add or replace anything I need later. I think I gonna have more issues with mITX case to find and fit all the parts inside cause of its size. Besides that I don't know about temps and noise in such cases, especially if I want to build Threadripper, so... Anyway, I still thinking of it, I really hope I get Alienware Area 51m as soon as possible, so I don't have to build such mad desktop. By the way, as monitor, I could use 15" portable USB powered one, that I use for PS4, so not a big deal, cause it weghits under 2lbs.

 

Personally, if it is as infrequent as once a year, I wouldn’t even bother too much with smaller stuff like mITX, etc. Moving it would be such a rare event that weight really wouldn’t matter imo.

 

How would you transport it? I would choose "biggest" case that fits in your preferred transport method. Mitx, matx, normal atx... Then plan rest of the computer around that.

Since it is once a year type moving, you could look for a pelican case with foam insert. It could take all the accessories too.

 

I will be building a SFF PC when my mobo comes back from RMA.

On airplane. Pelican case is huge and heavy, I think about something much smaller as backpack or messenger bag.

 

Another possible option is the ASRock Deskmini Z370 or mSTX motherboard.

 

So I decided to build mITX in Louqe Ghost S1. Honestly, this is not final decision, cause I'm not sure what components to buy. Here are some questions I need help with:

1. Is Ghost S1 good choice or you know something better? I know about Dan Case A4, but I don't like it's construction.

2. What mobo to buy for 9900K? There are not too many options, I like Asus, but I've seen review for AsRock as a best one, but I don't know why. I think all of them have 2 m.2 slots so I can use it in RAID 0.

3. What GPU? As I know the case for up to 305mm and 2.1 slot. The RTX 2080 Ti FE might be good, but maybe there is something better or it doesn't matter, cause all of them overclockable?

4. RAM. I found 32x2 but costs 800$ so I better get 16x2, don't wanna pay double price. But which one to buy? Does MHz matter or I can get any with XMP and only pay attention on latency?

So basically that's it. I gonna order everything as soon as choose what to buy.

 

I REALLY like my ASRock x299-itx/ac mobo. Don't know why the LGA-1151 would be that much different, except perhaps the 2 desktop DIMMs vs. 4 SO-DIMMs. I have the 4x8GB of 3000MHz SO-DIMMs, but the board supports 4000MHz if needed.

Well... If you can jump on that backpack or messenger bag and the computer stays intact (while inside the bag!) then it protects the case well enough. Prepare for the worst.
