My new desktop XPS just shipped. Should be here in a week. I am excited to get this to start doing 4k video editing on resolve. My little inspiron laptop can do very small bursts of 1080 before it starts to spin the fans into jet engine territory. I worked with it quite a bit....but it's really NOT ideal. I am keeping resolve on it and I have watched some videos about optimizing resolve for "any" computer. I love my laptop, it's gotten some good workouts but it's time to get the desktop running for serious 4k work. I may get some kryonaut and repaste my laptop too. That may help some as well.
The new desktop is the 8490, it has an i7 10700, 16gb dual channel ram (upgrading to 128gb as soon as it is up and running at home), a 512gb NVME, 2tb 7200 hdd, 2070 video card, blueray burner and I ordered a non touch 24" monitor to sit along side my 24" touch. I can't wait to get it up and running. I was going to build my own system, but I cannot wait to gather parts and I have some jobs that need to get done for clients and I need the PC to complete them.

Sometimes a already built system will work fine only difference is if you go Hard Core Gaming then this needs really to be a custom parts setup. What matters in a video production grade prebuilt is the software that you use if it's subpar then no amount of hardware will change that.
-
We will see now won't we. I would love for you to elaborate on your "custom parts" comment. It has a good Processor, A really good video card, Ram is lacking right now (but will be fixed within a week of getting the machine), and has a fast drive (3 more will be added for video cache work). Resolve, the affinity suite and polarr are the software programs I use for my work.

That's why I said elaborate @saturnotaku. I know one thing, I never picked the K version of the processor, as I felt I didn't need it and therefore, I have a chintzy little cooler. I have to upgrade the cooler on the CPU and I might as well upgrade the fans inside the box as well.

Pre-built big box brand desktops like Dell and HP are OK for normal things as long as you order a system configured with specs that equal or exceed the requirements of the intended use. The main problem with them is they are designed to only be as capable as what they intended and they often incorporate proprietary parts that can interfere with upgrades or repairs using aftermarket parts. Adding custom aftermarket parts is often not accommodated by the chassis and some of the connections and dimensions of the parts they use are proprietary and/or uncommon. Their firmware is usually very limiting and it is not unusual for them to block generational upgrades by refusing to release supporting firmware updates that are otherwise common throughout the industry.
Even Alienware, despite the fact that their target market is gamers, has been known to refuse to support simple drop-in CPU upgrades that are common in the aftermarket channels with nothing more than a BIOS flash. Their intent is to sell a new desktop rather than allowing one to upgrade what they already purchased.
Not everyone can or wants to build their own system. If the intent is to upgrade a pre-built desktop as budget affords or technology advances, it is generally better to go with a boutique brand that uses off-shelf parts that adhere to all industry standards and use nothing proprietary in the build.Last edited: Mar 13, 2021 -
Exactly what I did. I can upgrade the ram, drives etc as needed. The processor, and graphics card are what I need to do my intended job. I need to upgrade the ram, and add extra drives fo.r storage and scratch drives for resolve. Everything else in my system is purchased with the intent I need. I don't care if a custom built system is faster than my system. I could give two sweet F's . my new desktop will do what I need to make money. I don't care that it benches lower than a 50,000 dollar system. a 500o dollar system or anything else. I JUST DON'T CARE. I care that when I put my memory cards into my system I can edit and create without slow downs. NOTHING ELSE. Everything else is white noise to me.....

Below applies to others and it's accurate even if it doesn't affect everyone. Knowledge is power.

I hope it works out for you splendidly for your needs @kojack . I might look into Dell for a desktop machine for myself someday. And jeez, 128GB? That's a humongous amount of RAM to me compared with what I consider a lot being 32GB in my Zbook!
May I ask why that much? -

Part one of two came yesterday. My new monitor. I like it and it is a very close match to my older 24" touchscreen. Images when I get the desktop and have it all setup the way I want

Just setting up my new computer. HOLY C(*& is this thing fast. Being plugged into my network makes a huge difference in internet speeds. Plus the overall system is just "SNAPPY" compared to my notebook with the lesser processor in it.

The current crop of XPS machines looks pretty nice. Costco has one on sale for $999 right now that has the 10700, 1660 Ti, 512 GB SSD, and 1 TB HDD. I'm honestly tempted to pick one up and swap the stock GPU for my RTX 3060 Ti.

After running my new workstation for a few weeks now. I LOVE IT. My upgrade path is as follows now. Coming very soon to edit videos from my new canon XC10 video camera are the following. sabrent 4tb nvme ssd with heat sink, 14tb seagate HDD for storage, 2 seagate 2tb SSD for scratch drives for resolve, 128gb of ddr4 ram, noctua CPU cooler, case fan and PSU fan for quiet computing, and firewire pci card to connect my old Mini DV camera to the system.
I am moving my office to my son's old pad. I am now going to be running a real estate business as well as my creative/marketing businesses from my home and his area had a large main room, a nice bedroom to become my office and another smaller room for my storage, filing and Printers. I am ordering a desk made for two workstations for my creative desk and another for my writing desk. I cannot wait to get this all going now. I have been flat out studying for my real estate license and should have that completed in 3 or 4 weeks. Then on to getting my real estate business and property management business up and running. I have a great brokerage behind me, and I have the option to purchase the brokerage in 2 years after I get through the honeymoon period. I will be purchasing the brokerage for my area and then hire 3 or 4 agents under me so they make me money.Last edited: Apr 29, 2021 -
I learned this the hard way. You can never own (2) in one, and still have the best of both worlds.
Gaming laptops offer huge compromises. They have to always be plugged in to offer full power. And that full power still isn’t close to a desktop equivalent. They run hot, they run loud. While running unplugged the performance is pretty sub par.
So, I run a beast desktop with the best cooling. And a macbook Air M1.
The desktop PC can obviously do all of the heavy stuff easily. Although, the fanless macbook Air M1 can beat even the fastest laptop cpu in the world (While that laptop is unplugged) and while the Macbook Air M1 is unplugged too. -
I need a laptop that can handle anything I throw at it work wise. The desktop is for big projects, but my laptop needs to be able to do it as well since it's a work device for me.

@Papusan
Does the RTX 3080 included in the Aurora R12 have a LHR (light hash rate) which is a hardware limiter ? Or it comes as the standard model with no hash limiter ? -
And as a side-note... Dell's desktop GPUs is all capped and don't offer gliding higher TGP as option like the more well known brands.

It's funny how fast I went from jonesing to upgrade to a 3070-3080 when those launched to feeling extremely privileged to even have a 2070...

Just got my two SSD's installed for Resolve work. 480 and 980 gb kingstons. I was talking to a video producer who works in resolve on a daily basis. He explained to me the fastest bestest drives are not needed for project and cache/scrath drives. For a long time he was using spinny drives with good success. I felt comfortable using these two drives for my system. I have them installed now and can't wait to get some media running through it. Next up is a MASSIVE ram upgrade.
