Ok brothers. (ignoring my phones predictive text on the thread title 'you're' instead of 'your')
I'm slowly putting a desktop together.
So far its an X99 matx in a Air 240 case. Corsair ddr4 2400 ram.
5820k is coming next. I'm just using all in one coolers... for now.
x 2 GPU's is on the cards. Please spare me any 'that's overkill' type of commentsNo such thing
Now I know the GPU options out there. But I respect alot members insight here and this desktop section is a ghost town.
So far the plan was 2 x 980's.
I am happy to wait an see what AMD's offerings are with the 390x, however they may need to be watercooled. I'm sure they are offering both air and watercooled models. However without the cooler I they may run hot? Small case and all. Due to the case, this would prevent using the watercooled releases.
Titan X - I haven't ruled it out but budget dictates.. I would only buy 1.. Initially.
2 x 970 isn't an option. It needs to trounce my laptop 980m SLI to make sense (to me).
Love to hear your thoughts.

Give it a few days and things on both AMD and Nvidia sides will be more clear

Yeah I hope so. I feel like the gloves might be coming off this round.

http://www.game-debate.com/news/?news=16275&graphics=GeForce GTX 980 Ti 8GB&title=GTX 980 Ti Benchmarks Compared to Titan X And R9 390X Game Performance Analysis
Not sure how legit the results/sources are, but AMD seems to be back in the game.
Looks like the Titan X and M390x are going to be close, but I'm betting NVIDIA's superior driver support will be a huge benefit to gamers. However, price is going to be a huge factor in this debate (which is better). The Titan X is expected to be $1299-$1349, while the 980Ti is expected to be around $799.
In some ways, the 980 is already an old card. But it's still an excellent option for gamers. NVIDIA was planning to release the 980Ti back in December/January, but production issues delayed the release.Last edited: Mar 16, 2015TBoneSan likes this. -
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Sit on it. You already have a powerful enough laptop, so there's no rush. See what AMD and nVidia will have to offer and then decide which graphics card to buy.

Forgot to mention in my previous post that the 390x is expected to have a whopping $700-$799 price tag for that insane level of performance. You can't beat that.
-
Cheers.. Yeah it might be a good time to give AMD some love. Plus I'd really like to stick it to Nvidia if I have the chance. My only concern is one of these 390x's on air might thermally prohibit having dual cards in the air 240 - I hope this isn't the case (pun intended). Hopefully they run alot cooler than the 290x leaf blowers.
Seeing some other people's builds 980 SLI seems to thermally work quite well, although on the limits.
Wait and see I guess. -
I really really like the graphite series 380t

Looks like the Titan X has an official price tag of $999.

Hmm... $999...still a lot lol
I wonder if the 390x will go as low as $599 ... it would be slaughter city if they do. AMD might take a massive chunk of their market share back, and then some.
I doubt AMD will come out the gates at that price if it really is a Titan killer though. I'm guessing $699, perhaps even $799. My fingers are crossed it's not a hair dryer without a cooler. But with a 300 TDP the chances are pretty slim otherwise. -
A concern of mine is purchasing Windows 8.1 this late when Windows 10 is around the corner. Apparently Windows 10 is free for 12 months (if you upgrade) and then you have to buy it.Last edited: Mar 17, 2015 -
Is that for your GA or a desktop?
I wouldn't worry too much about Windows 10 yet. Just pretend it doesn't exist, finally when it comes out you can upgrade for free if DX12 is all its cracked up to be.
I have a feeling I'll probably be sporting a couple of 980's in due time. I have a gut feeling I won't be able to manage 2 x 390x's on air right next to each other unless I change my case which isn't an option. -
How about 390X CrossFire:
Top card reference WC
Bottom card non-reference open air cooler
?TBoneSan likes this. -
Interesting...
That could possibly work. I think I'd have to go for a smaller 120 rad instead of the 240 for the CPU. I pretty sure the air 240 can only fit them at the front.
So assuming the WC edition came with a 120 it could possibly fit along side the CPU rad side by side at the front.
Do you think a 120 is enough to quench a 5820k at 4.5? -
Yeah it would be..

Like an H60/X31/Nepton 120XL? Doubt it. Haswell-E is a monster when overclocked and and not in a good way. A big dual-tower air cooler like an NH-D14/D15 or PH-TC14PE would do a much better job if they fit.
TBH I'm surprised you went with Haswell-E and 2 GPUs in such a small case. You'll probably have to suck it up and get 2 reference 980/980 Ti/Titan X cards. You'll need blower cards and at least a 240mm (if not 280mm) AIO for Haswell-E.Last edited: Mar 18, 2015 -
Yeah.. The case choice mainly came down to eventually needing to transport it or ship it back home one day. I probably still would have gone matx though, just a bigger case.
The h80i might do, but things might start getting real noisy.
I might settle for some blower cards and get a better AIO on the CPU . Titan X can perhaps screw off. We all know a TI is on the cards. Probably further away than I'm willing to wait though.
At least 980's should start dropping in price now.
Anyway.. Still waiting on my PSU/RAM/MB to be delivered... Then I'll grab the other parts.
Cheers for your help champ. -

Yeah the GA is pointless. A mini ITX and an older alienware with HDMI-in is a better proposition.. Not that anyone would. But if you think of it like that, the GA becomes even more overpriced and redundant. -
I'm definitely going X99, DDR4 2666MHz, Hexa-core CPU, etc. in anticipation for upgrades. There are a bunch of new monitors coming out soon by ASUS - G-SYNC, 1440p, 144Hz, IPS, etc. and start at around $599. By next year they should be widely available and much cheaper. 2016 is going to be a great year for gamers and enthusiasts.Last edited: Mar 18, 2015TBoneSan likes this. -
Yeah that high refresh IPS has peaked my interest big time. Finally one with a high refresh.
Shame I just got the ASUS 1080p 144fps only recently but I'm well happy with it. I can't go back to 60hz now. 24 inch is also at the limits for my desk space so I am limited with that too. -
I love my new X99/970/5820k desktop build. I am glad to see some life in this section of the forums. I've been hunting around for a new forum to post in as it seems the desktop hardware section and desktop review is basically a ghost town.
I opted for a Asus Strix 970 as I have the Asus VG248QE 144 1080p monitor as well, and this build drives that monitor perfectly. I'm been eyeing that new Acer IPS 144 that is just releasing. Though I bet my wife would kill me though if she saw me getting an $700-800 monitor after I just got this monitor not too long ago. May have to pick up some open trips to subsidize that purchase haha.
I also went cheap on the ram a bit, and went with some budget type Crucial Ballistix Sport 2X8GB 2400. Works great. -
I just ordered my first desktop build. (Built some for others, but never kept a build for myself.) All of the parts should be here by Saturday.
Ordered AlphaCool radiators, Koolance water blocks, etc. - premium water cooling setup in anticipation for next years plans.
Decided to go with the ASUS Strix GTX 980 for the time being. Got a nice deal because I signed up for Amazon Prime's Card and apparently get "The Witcher 3" download for free. It's plenty for my 1080p monitors. Next year I plan to do some major upgrading in the screen and GPU department.
Hopefully I like the build. I've been a straight laptop gamer/user for many years.Last edited: Mar 18, 2015killkenny1 and Talon like this. -

With Alphacool rads just watch out for the extra Z-height clearance you need for the plugs to seal up the extra unused ports. I had to break out the Dremel on my Enthoo Primo to get the bottom rad to fit snug. -
Ordered quite a few things from different places. The "third party" seller (Titan Rig) on Amazon I chose for the fittings forgot to include them in the box. So, it says, "Delivered" but I don't have them. Amazon refunded me on that - still waiting for it, though.
The Koolance products I ordered arrived on time and in perfect condition with excellent packaging. I will be spending a few extra dollars and ordering directly from them from now on to avoid issues. It's not worth the trouble to save a bit of money. -
Well I ended up snagging a reference 980, SLI at a later date unless 390x does something miraculous on temps. My rig is just about built now... Coming along nicely and looking really clean. Actually I haven't built a machine since 1998.. Lol. I was surprised by how little there is to do. I guess that's from years of m18x teardown.
No time for a build log, plus it's nothing we haven't seen before.
Waiting on the delivery of the GPU and then I'll transfer the HDDs from my laptop.
GPU Selection.. You're thoughts
