Get Desktop (server) now or wait?

Looking for a server with at least 512GB of ram, I can wait 6 months if the next gen of CPU will be out.

I am currently looking at the the HP Z8 (something like the Dell Precision 7920).

For me memory capacity is the main requirement, I would like it to be expandable in the future.

One current option is a dual CPU config with Xeon Gold 5222 Processor (4 Core, up to 3.90Ghz, 16.5M Cache)
The intel specs say it the memory capacity of the CPU is 1TB.

Are there better CPUs coming out in 4-5 months? If so, will they allow more RAM capacity than 1TB?

Also, neither the Dell Precision 7920 nor the HP Z8 seem to have an option for AMD cpus. Why is that? I gather AMD has better CPUs now?

A leaked Geekbench listing for Intel's upcoming Ice Lake server parts shows massive performance gains. The 12-core Ice Lake server ES delivers nearly the same multithreaded performance as a 24-core Cascade Lake part.

Intel's monolithic die design means that more cores cost exponentially more to manufacture. If Intel can bring Ice Lake Xeons to the market, delivering more performance with fewer cores, it could mean the end for AMD's server ambitions, even as Team Red preps EPYC Milan.

 

When are these expected to ship?

 

I don't know. But AMD have put pressure on Intel now so we may see it at the end of the year.

 

It looks like a real problem trying to find deskside / desktop tower servers, here's a few I found so far, and they have buildable configurations with 2nd gen EPYC CPU's as options for the build:

This guy thinks Dell killed the AMD based Optiplex servers last year, and so far I can't find updates on when new Optiplex models with AMD CPU's will be coming out from DELL.

"I am a Technology Director for a K-12 school district and we had been buying Optiplex 5055's which run a Ryzen 1600 Pro CPU. This week we were told they were EOL'ing that SKU and there would no longer be an Optiplex option that runs AMD cpu's from our sales rep.

When I inquired further he said that their internal messaging on the matter is still "muddy" but it looks like they are pulling AMD from all "Buisness class" products, i.e. Optiplex and * Poweredge * lines. [he later struck through Poweredge]

This part is just my opinion, but it sure seems like "someone" leaned on Dell to make this happen.

I'm concerned with price to performance. ** The alternative options we were given that were comparable to the AMD system we were buying were $300-$350 more expensive. ** As the IT Director of a K-12 district price to performance is king. Couldn't care less who's parts it ends up being but currently AMD does own the price to performance crown as far as I can tell and Dell not having them as an option is concerning.

Edit: * Looks like the server side is still getting some AMD options based on comments below. Information I was given was directly from our Sales rep at Dell.

Edit2:** Dell has gotten back with us and given us the option of continuing to purchase 5055's while those units last or to switch to a 5070 equipped with an i5-8400 that beats the pricing of the 5055 we were buying by around $50 per system. They did say that they expect the 5055 to be completely EOL'ed by December and no longer available after that point."

"I just contacted Dell as a perspective server buyer. They currently do offer Naples CPUs and will be offering Rome when it comes out. Maybe there was confusion in the listed offerings?"

I'm assuming that's for the rack-mount models, but it's worth a call to Dell to make sure.

My experience with DELL is they are very Anti-AMD and only stock either crap or lock the decent products behind a 'call for quote' restriction."

It's always been a battle with Dell to get AMD products, so I'd suggest calling through a bunch of sales and marketing nexus inside of Dell - different business units - to see if anyone has any news on the Optiplex replacements - AMD of any kind.

I did finally find a Dell Optiplex 5055 AMD link at the top of this page, but it "redirects too many times" and the browser aborts... convenient.

If you've got 6 months, maybe start beating on Dell and your other favorite suppliers to start offering what you need.

It's official: Intel's high-performance 10nm is finally here. After what seems like years of waiting, Intel's high-performance 10nm processors have entered final testing stages and the tell-tale leaks are beginning to sprout everywhere. After trialing 10nm low power in low volume production a year or so back, it seems like Intel is finally snapping out of its reverie and overcoming this increasingly tall obstacle. This particular leak showcases a 10nm 14-core/28-thread part that unless I am very much mistaken had its sibling benchmarked just a few days ago on Geekbench.
