Any suggestions for eliminating a noisy back-up HDD? Software application? Power tweak?
Western Digital 2TB HDD (WD2003FZEX)
Same exact issue as in the clip below. The HDD sound drives me nuts. Fast HDD, passes all diag. tests, and I swapped out both a new power and Sata cord/cable. Still loud AF. Its a fam. members machine, used as a back-up drive, so I'll sacrifice speed.![]()
Thanks in advance for any help or feedback!

If the drive is not faulty in any way, decoupling it from the case with silicone mounts is the way to go. Mind you, it will still be audible, but it can make a huge difference.

Alot of the noise is also the mounting system as well but a drive 7200rpm can more more noise then a 5400rpm regardless and the cage if all metal will transmit noise as opposed to if the cradle with plastic sitting in a metal cradle to protected it.

From personal experience, if a hard drive is noisy its not healthy!
I've had drives that passed all tests but a few weeks later just quit and die. As its a backup drive this may not matter so much and you can wait and replace it later, but if it was a main drive i would replace it ASAP.
If you are referring to the intermittent clacking noises in the video clip replace the drive as it will die, if its the background whine/hum then that's relatively normal and as others have said maybe try some rubber feet/mounts to isolate the noise from the main case. -
I've had desktop HDs that where noisy and still work for years. The noise is just the HD heads moving around.

Its possible it could continue to work (also depends on if it ALWAYS made that noise), but a decent hard drive shouldn't.
Anyway as a backup drive it really shouldn't make those noises unless its being accessed (if its just a case of noisy heads)
Oh just thought of something you can try. Depending on how often you use it and the ability of the family member to turn on/off the drive as needed. You could disable the drive in the windows software (computer management i think, on a mac right now so can't check). It should power down the drive so it wont make any noise, and you would just need to activate it again when you want to do backups. -
