I tried copying the nv_dispi.inf from the 353.30 drivers into the 345.20 folder but then it said missing files

how to modify the inf to allow me to install the older 345.20 driver onto my 980GTX? or would that not work at all since it's an older driver?

The 353.30 throttling is killing my performance.

I've never done it the way you mention. I just add my GPU ID to the inf file in two places and that's it. It's gotten to the point whenever there is a new driver I just copy and past my info into the new driver and that's it. Just copy and paste your pc info into the inf file and be done.

Do you have a 980 or a 980M? Because your sig shows two 980Ti cards and two 780Ms. Neither of which is a 980.

    I have a 980 Ti, it's not supported.

So I managed to edit the INF file and installed it but it didn't even offer to install the 3D Vision driver nor PhysX or anything else but the graphics driver. Furthermore, once I installed it and rebooted, when right clicking and choosing the nVIDIA Control Panel it never launches so I'm just gonna stick to 353.06 for now until nVIDIA fixes their buggy 353.30 drivers.

Simple tweak. Get your hardware ID from Device Manager. Find the 980 or Titan X hardware ID in the nv_dispi.inf (one or the other, not both,) and replace it with yours. If you don't know the 980 or Titan X hardware ID, just go down to [Strings] and find it, then use Find > Replace All to replace that hardware ID with your own. Then, under [Strings] change the name to match your GPU, save the INF, then install. Same process as mobile INF mod.

FYI - I have trouble all the time with NVCP not opening with all of the garbage drivers released since February. I also have trouble with the screen going black during driver installation. After installing new drivers, rebooting, installing them a second time (no cleaning or uninstalling, just over the top) and rebooting again that often fixes the problem. Reminds me of the "bad old days" with an endless supply of screwed up AMD drivers and how over the top buggy CCC always was, refusing to install correctly and/or refusing to launch.

If you have 980Ti cards (which is why I asked what you had) you need to be using these for stability http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3698

PLEASE be specific about what you actually own. The worst thing you could possibly do is have us try to force incompatible hardware or software on you because you didn't correctly tell us what you own.

Oh I did find the hardware ID and I did add it in all respective sections and the installation DID go through but it only offered to install the barebone driver with no PhysX, HD Audio, etc. So I thought fine let me just see what happens after reboot I just want to benchmark to see if it's better with the Ice Storm benchmark but it was very buggy, the nVIDIA Control Panel wouldn't even launch so I came to a conclusion that this driver is really old for my 980 Ti

You're not the only one with 980 Ti issues. GeForce forums have multiple posts from owners of shiny new 980 Ti GPUs that are not working right. Since the INF mod didn't work correctly, you'll probably have to just wait a month or two for them to release something better... if they do. They're on a 5-month streak of producing screwed drivers, so it might take longer than normal. As messed up as things are getting, they really need to think about releasing Fermi/Kepler drivers along side of a separate driver for Maxwell instead of trying to follow a unified driver model that doesn't work fantastic for anything. This used to work really well for them, but they're doing so much retarded nonsense now that they're screwing up mature systems with their hocus-pocus Maxwell "efficiency" filth. If they drag their feet, maybe Origin will consider swapping you out for GPUs that work better. These should have worked flawlessly on launch day, but it seems like nobody knows how to do that any more. Almost everything seems screwed up at launch lately... hardware and software.

Nothing seems to work at launch day, 0 quality control! GeForce 980 Ti, Intel 750 PCIe SSD, a behemoth of an SSD that takes longer than a 10 year old HDD to load Windows (28 secs minimum loading time), and the list goes on....

750 slow boot seems to be an NVMe+Win 7 specific issue per TechPowerUp.

I mean look at the ridiculous workaround they did to get 750 bootable under Win 7:

Here's a fix I use on my 980ti. What Mr Fox outlined is what essentially works. This helped myself and a few people who care enough. A lot of desktop folk aren't used to having to mod their drivers... lol... should probably let em drown but "..eye for a eye..whole world blind.." :D

You need to mod " nv_dispi" and also update your "listed devices".

I've had set of modded 350.12 980 drivers ever since I had this 980ti. I keep going back to them because Nvdia suck lemons.
    They work without a hitch.

See my post #10 for instructions and post #7 ( Predator BGs) for the download.

As I said if you read my previous post, I did manage to mod the INF file just fine but when installing the driver, it only offers to install the graphics driver but not the PhysX Driver, Mira multicast driver, HD Audio Driver, etc.

And when I did install the driver only and reboot, the nVIDIA Control Panel will not open so this driver really is not suited to work with the 980 Ti

Drivers were too old? Which drivers were you trying to mod?

You're missing a step. It's fine if you can't be bothered but it's a pretty easy fix if you want to help us help you.
Mines running like a swiss army watch.

Read my post and download the file pre-done for you already. Use it installing 350.12 drivers (just before TI released) and a listeddevices.txt from 353.06 to override the newer drivers. Profit.

Thank you so much for trying to help.

I was trying to install 345.20 as those gave me the best performance on my 780M GTX SLI. I know this is like comparing apples to oranges but what do you think?

Shall I continue trying to install 345.20 or shall I try 350.12?

And where is that INF file that you made for me? Please note this is a desktop 980 Ti, I would appreciate the link if you have that pre-modded INF file for me.

    No worries.

Those drivers predate 980 TI (yes desktop) by too much. That might be why you're having trouble
Try 350.12 which is what I am using.

Post #18 of this current thread I've carefully linked you to the thread and what to do over at Guru3D.
Full instructions are there and the modded " nv_dispi" is downloadable from another members post on the same page.

And then use Listed Devices from 353.06 folder to override Listed Devices on 350.12

I copied that inf file to the Display Driver folder of the 350.12 drivers and this time, I did get all the components to install unlike 345.20, after the installation started for a while, I got this:

I think no driver other than 353.xx will work with the 980 Ti, I will just have to wait for nVIDIA to release an updated driver that fixes their mess already :(

Are you using W8? You need to disable Driver Signature Enforcement too.
See my post above. I've got them installed and running well.

Ohhh ok, just before I go through the hassle again, did they give you better or worse performance than the 353.xx?

Please post your Ice Storm v1.2 benchmark, in SLI mode if you have dual GPUs, if not, then a single GPU benchmark would sort of give me an idea what to expect.

    Thanks

No I didn't bother even benching them. My guess is they would be within the margin of errors worth of difference .
