I'd love to see a HT i5 come out. But that might eat into i7 sales, so I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah, I'd like to see that too - I'd like for their i7 lineup to start using more than 4 cores as standard (say 6 physical cores) (obviously while keeping prices the same as current 4 core i7's) & of course HT on those more than 4 physical cores too. This would give them space in the lineup to allow their i5 lineup to consist of 4 physical cores combined with HT. -

That's even better, a 6 core base i7 would be great.hmscott and Robbo99999 like this. -

You mean E5-1650? Right?
I have an i7-5820K @ 4.0GHz and GTX 980 Ti and happy as a clam. For video editing it's great. For gaming, great. Waiting to get 1080 Ti. I could run CPU at 4.5GHz but water pump starts to run audible and have to push the voltage a bit more than I'd like. 4GHz runs cool and quiet and perfectly stable at stock voltage.hmscott likes this. -
Yes... <facepalm>
$50 for GA-X79--UD3
$99.88 for E5-1650
Runs incredibly well on air at 4.4GHz.

I'm just a prima dona when it comes to ambient sound on my desktop. I like it quiet. Most others would say. pfffft, what sound? I'm waiting on the "next best" hexacore with hyper threading CPU, but so far nothing great has come along. I may push the i7-5820K a bit, because I've been doing more video editing and it sucks all 100% of available resources when doing so. Improving video encoding times by 10% or more would be more than welcome.hmscott likes this.

I have an 212 Evo for cooling. The PSU is EVGA G2 1000w and the Fractal Define R5 Blackout case. I can barely hear it running as it's very quiet.
I thought about watercooling. Looked hard at it. This case can take tons of radiators. But cooling is good enough I didn't need it.

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the jet engine on my desk.
Kidding, I know where you're coming from, it's nice if you're not actively gaming and don't have a headset on to be able to hear other things going on around you.

For a laptop, I get it. It's a confined space, and I'd rather have it more cool than quiet. But on my desktop, if I have this huge honkin' case sitting there I should be able to make it relatively quiet. I mean I can easily bump up the CPU speed, and I have, if I have a long queue of videos to process. Just sometimes I start it at night before I go to bed and my desktop is in my bedroom, and would rather not have a jet engine running next to my head.deadsmiley likes this.

Yeah, way easier to silence a desktop than a laptop.hmscott likes this. -
So when saving money and building a mobile small gaming mini/micro ATX machine, it's pointless to go for the i7... from my perspective that is

Just because your building small doesn't mean your necessarily trying to save money....hmscott likes this.

That is why I wrote from my perspective and why I used "when" in that specific way in my sentence.
I am trying to undertake a somewhat challenging task - emptying and hollowing my OG Xbox to fit a micro ATX build inside - being a student who has a moneysink apartment, makes it a bit harder to buy expensive

Seconding the request for build pics. Sounds like a fun project! -
Yes I will!
I still have to upload my repaste etc for my current MSI, but the Xbox revival will be a giant project with a thread to cover it all with help from the forums ofc
The Xbox mods I've seen are great, one guy went absolutely overboard and made a HTPC out of one, but it was 7 years ago or so, so the hardware was limited - a second one completely revamped the whole thing, but used professional tools up towards the 4000$ mark, the whole room was a giant toolbox.
A few remaining Xbox mods really didn't do a good job, they tried to keep the same original feeling, but the lack of hardware and planning on their side made the project(s) seem a bit.... underachieving.
My plan is to sketchup the whole thing, with all the measurements, maximum power p $/£/€ for a certain realistic budget.
currently saving up bit by bit

Watch Dogs 2 CPU Benchmark - When an i7 Matters
Published on Feb 20, 2017
Our CPU benchmark of Watch Dogs 2 provides useful insight to the game's multithreaded tendencies as we launch into benchmarking of new CPUs, like the eventual Ryzen coverage & Intel Pentium benchmarks.

I put the Nexus Watch Dog CPU videos up for the upcoming Intel vs Ryzen desktop CPU comparisons, not laptop parts; note we are in the Desktop Hardware Forum.
This is preparation for the AMD Ryzen release, Nexus will come out with another Watch Dogs 2 video with all the new Ryzen CPU Sku's.Last edited: Feb 20, 2017 -

Hi
Hyper- Thereading has be in Intel's process for time. It's the foremost distinction among the Core i5 and i7, and so as to loads of sports competition don't use it explain why i5s authority a number of grave gaming rig. If you've be bearing in mind an improve but you are not in no doubt if you require Hyper Threading, this videotape opening determination help.
severely language, Hyper-Threading is most excellent practical to operation and application anywhere numerous everyday jobs can be cleverly planned so there's no inactive occasion on your processor. farm duties similar to video constraint, 3D depiction, and grave multi-tasking are huge example. likewise, Hyper Threading can aid a CPU thrust beam everyday jobs similar to backdrop application or browser window to one processor, while important application like sports competition or full-screen videocassette goes to another.

They will do nothing, because they don't have to yet. Ryzen is an infant in a world dominated by middle aged Intel technology. There will be lots of growing pains, as we've already seen by its meager overclocking ability and less than stellar 1080p gaming performance. I'm not saying that it won't get better, but for now, Intel can sit and wait. You can still buy an i7-7700k for ~$400 that will easily compete with the R7 1700x at a similar price point. However for heavy multi-threaded tasks like rendering and encoding the AMD can dominate due to it having so many more cores.
-
The only issue with Ryzen is that it is not optimised for gaming as of yet.
Have you seen every other benchmark? How efficiently all those cores render high quality videos? Absolutely insane.
They have a golden child on their hands, and if that architecture can move into the server world, they will make tons of money. Intel has to step up their game, and they are trying.
Several resellers in Europe have lowered their prices on Intel CPU's right now! Ryzen builds are being marketed heavily and already sold out (at least in a few places in Scandinavia).
I will, without a doubt, when the opportunity shows, buy a desktop and laptop AMD machine. All those cores, make a massive difference, at least for me.TomJGX, HTWingNut, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -

I have a feeling that dominating in the workstation / rendering department will be more important than we realize. Gaming is great but the dollars coming in from the likely business/enterprise market for that sort of cost to performance advantage are going to likely affect all areas going forward. -
This is true. I guess I was thinking more from a gaming perspective. I'd be happy to get one for rendering alone. I've been doing more fun video work on the side and even my i7-5820K @ 4GHz with 6 cores w/hyperthreading I wish would move faster.
I'm glad to see AMD back in the game and glad to give them another chance. Hoping they an come out with a Nvidia Volta killer too. Would be nice to have a full AMD system again.
